  1. Hi!
Is it possible to download this opera as video and separately subtitles?
The opera is the same but there are 3 different URLs (the first one with french subtitles, the other with german subtitles):
    https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/120090-001-A/les-contes-d-hoffmann/ Expires in 3 days.
    https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/120090-001-A/jacques-offenbach-hoffmanns-erzaehlungen/ Expires in 3 days.
    https://on.orf.at/video/14238724/jacques-offenbach-hoffmanns-erzaehlungen
(ORF.at geo Austria, Arte.tv should be geo free for this video)

I found only video (different qualities) and audio.
    I used F12, Stream Detector, yt-dlp

You can use yt-dlp/N_m3u8DL-RE to download the m3u8 obtained from stream detector. Then you can download separately the vtt that is found as well with stream detector. No geo enforcing for download. Only for accessing the page and manually obtaining that m3u8 URL

Not by French Arte, not by german Arte.

  5. As far as I see there are no subtitles inside. At least there is no text inside, only .jpg

My bad. The vtt files aren't subtitles. The sub you see is actually burned in the video for the first 2 links. So you would need to apply OCR software to extract. I think subtitle edit can do it.

No idea about the type of subtitles for the third link you wrote since it needs a vpn.

  8. Arte FR and GER have always burnt-in subtitles, so no vtt (and if , then with additional things).
Is the ORF version exactly the same?

  9. Wow… I've never seen any shows with hardcoded subtitles by Arte!

    Well It's not true actually.
If the shows by Arte have subtitles, they are always (or mostly) text subtitles in .vtt
Arte provides often subtitles. Sometimes there are 2 subtitles but not seldom there are 5-6 subtitles in one show.

For example the documentary ARTE Reportage The Extradition of Julian Assange https://www.arte.tv/en/videos/103364-000-A/arte-reportage/
You can download the documentary with 3 audios and 6 text subtitles.
English, German, French, Spanish, Polish and Italian subtitles :
    Code:
    https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/103000/103300/103364-000-A/210701113150/medias/103364-000-A_st_VO-ANG.vtt
    https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/103000/103300/103364-000-A/210701113150/medias/103364-000-A_st_VA-ALL.vtt
    https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/103000/103300/103364-000-A/210701113150/medias/103364-000-A_st_VF-MAL.vtt
    https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/103000/103300/103364-000-A/210701113150/medias/103364-000-A_st_VO-ESP.vtt
    https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/103000/103300/103364-000-A/210701113150/medias/103364-000-A_st_VO-POL.vtt
    https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/103000/103300/103364-000-A/210701113150/medias/103364-000-A_st_VO-ITA.vtt
But if you download your Arte shows with the help of such software like MediathekView or even JDownloader you will get your videos with hardcoded subtitles (if you choose "with subtitles"), and only in 720p, for example:
Julian Assange with hardcoded german subtitles:
    Code:
    https://arteptweb-a.akamaihd.net/am/ptweb/103000/103300/103364-000-A_SQ_0_VA-STMA_05942135_MP4-2200_AMM-PTWEB_1a48UgVmzu.mp4

  11. That surprises me. I seldom download from arte, but when I did it were always German versions with hardcoded German subs or the French version with hc. French subs. But I only downloaded movies, where each sign like "Saloon" is hardcoded subbed, which is more than unnecessary. Maybe that was the reason, but my generalisation was wrong anyway.

    Thank you for the answer.

    Thank you for the link.
I saw very often files like SPR.vtt by Arte but had no idea what do they do with such files. It seems that they use it for Playback.

When it expires, you can try finding it in the MediaTheck View they usually store Arte Concerts for more time.
Arte always hardcode operas for streaming but when they transmit it via satellite they are usually without hardcoded subtitles.
If you still need a soft subtitles version in *.srt format, I can create it with Whisper AI Speech-Text software.

OK I will give it a shot today. There will be a lot of errors but better than nothing. I will try to clean it a bit before I attach it for download. The audio is in French and the subtitles will also be in French.
Once you have the srt file, you can translate it to German, English or any other language using Subtitle Edit.

OK I did the transcription. As I downloaded this opera from MediaTheck View, there is an introduction and several people were interviewed and they spoke in different languages French and German but it looks like the result is not so bad. So I got these interviews also transcribed as a bonus.
You can superimpose the srt file over the hardcoded subtitles by shifting it in VLC by about 300 pixels up.
If your French is good then you can try to correct the errors by comparing the hardcoded with the srt subtitles.
    Have fun.

    Thank you very much.
I don't know Whisper AI Speech-Text App at all. What kind of software is it?
First I thought that you are going to make/save pictures from video (something like image based .idx/.sub subtitle) and then OCR them.

    You are welcome.
Here is some information about Whisper AI
    https://github.com/openai/whisper
The other alternative that you mentioned is more reliable but can take a lot of time, for this opera of more than 3 hours it can take several hours and a lot of hard work.
Here is a link to my channel explaining how to do it if you want to have a go at it.

If you are interested in classical music and operas, and you live in country that offers Mezzo and Mezzo Live then it is worth subscribing. Satellite reception is best but I think they have also streaming option. Just make sure they offer 1080p quality.
