  1. Hey everyone,

I’m trying to make the audio louder when watching movies or series in PotPlayer. I’ve set Max Amplification to 200%, similar to VLC’s 200% volume, but the audio is still lower than I’d like and gets a bit crackly. I think I might be adjusting the volume the wrong way, which is affecting the sound quality.

I’ve also tried enabling the normalizer, but it causes the audio to fluctuate. It makes the sound louder overall, but during loud sound effects, the normalizer cuts out, making the audio go quiet before getting louder again.

What’s the best way to increase the volume consistently and without distortion while watching movies or shows? Any tips would be really helpful!

    Thanks!

Just louder isnt always the solution and can cause distortion as you are finding. Are you listening on good speakers which are facing you?

I’m using a headset, but even with Max Amplification set to 200% in Potplayer, the sound is still too low compared to vlc and for my liking. When I turn up the master volume, the bass just gets louder and starts sounding crackly. Any tips on getting clear, louder audio without losing quality? Or should I just switch back to VLC, since I can get louder audio there without it distorting?

The headset may be contributing to the problem. It may be worth spending some money on a reasonable headset/headphones especially if you are spending a lot of time listening on them.
The headset may have the wrong impedance for your amplifier, causing the amplifier to overload.

Also EQ (tone adjustment) can make a big difference.

Thanks for the suggestions, @timtape! I really like how PotPlayer handles the bass—it gives that deep "bang and boom" feeling, which I don't get in VLC. However, when I increase both the Max Amplification and Master Volume, the bass becomes clearer, but after explosions or loud impacts, it sounds a bit muddy or overwhelming, almost like it's too much or distorted.

In VLC, the default volume settings boost the audio so it’s louder and clearer without the bass getting out of control. But in PotPlayer, while I love the powerful bass, I can’t seem to get the same balance of loudness and clarity without the bass sounding off after loud sounds. Is there a way to get both loudness and clarity with that deep bass in PotPlayer without the distortion?

  6. I’m giving up on trying to fix this for now—it’s just getting too annoying. In VLC, when I turn up the volume, everything gets louder and clearer, especially the dialogue, but there’s barely any kick to the explosions or bass. In PotPlayer, the dialogue is a little less loud, but the bass, kicks, and explosions are much more noticeable and harder, which is great. The downside is that sometimes the bass sounds like it’s rumbling or rattling after an explosion, which can be kind of annoying. It’s just not the smooth, deep bass I’d expect.

The two players in default or reset mode will probably sound the same. Once we change the settings on one player but not the other, then of course that player will sound different to the other player. Once we start changing the settings without really understanding the ramifications, things can get complicated. Most people will probably go with the default settings.

Even on default they both sound so diferent. You can hear the audio is more clear and louder in VLC, but when I change the amplifcation on potplayer it still doesnt get as loud. But the difference is that potplayer has more noticeable bang, boom, loud and quick sounds bassy sounds. But lower audio in general. If you were to change the volume in potplayer, how would you do it even though the amplifcation is on 200%.

Might try to switch over to mpc-hc to test out there instead, too much trouble going on with potplayer.

Again I suspect the problem is related to the headset. If you want really good bass the headset must be able to handle it.

Also each driver sitting on each ear must fit well. If you try centring the drivers on the ears and pressing the drivers harder against your ears does that improve the bass?
