  1. Hello!

I inherited a large box of about 50 home video VHS tapes. Some of the tapes are already 40 years old at this point. Luckily they still work after being stored very poorly for a long time, but the picture is degraded, especially the tapes from the early 1980s. I have a Deawoo VHS/DVD Combo Unit that seems to work okay. I'm planning on digitizing the tapes then distributing the video files to my family members.

So far I have purchased a Hauppauge USB-Live2 and installed windows 10 on my laptop. I am getting BSoD when selecting the capture card in VirtualDub and VirtualDub2 when selecting the (vfw) option. I got it to work on the (direct show) option only on the 32 bit version of VirtualDub2 and managed to record a few tapes, but I'm not getting the best results.
This is what I'm currently doing..

    1. Use VurtualDub2 to record 720x480@29.97fps with utvideo 422/601(not sure if that is the right option)
    2. Use VirtualDub2 to trim and de-interlace video into a second 59.94fps file
    3. Use HandBrake to compress into h264/mp3 and correct the aspect ratio to 4:3 for distribution.

I'm having audio and video studding and skipping problems that don't happen when I play the videos on my CRT TV. I'm guessing this Is a software problem because I don't have this problem when testing the Hauppauge Capture software.

I have a number of questions.
    1) Has anyone had an issue with BSoD(Blue Screen of Death) on windows 10 with a USB-Live2?
    2) Is Windows 7 better for capturing?
    3) Should I be using (direct show) or (vfw)
    4) How stupid, inefficient and insane is my presses?

I would really appreciate some direction, I'm not sure what to do or where to go from here. I'm probably going to try to and use my desktop since it has newer and better hardware, but it has Linux installed on it at the moment.

The USB-Live 2 (and most of the cards) does not provide good results in that contest. You need a high end S-VHS VCR with Time Base Correction and Y/C output. As alternative you can try to add a specific DVD-Recorder in pass-through mode (i.e. Panasonic ES10/ES15).

If the conditions of the tapes are not good, there is not much you can do. Adding an external TBC in addition to the above may help to obtain a watchable results.

The keys element for a proper capture are the conditions of the tapes and the player.

Provide an untouched sample of a raw capture for further analysis

In limited use, never on Win 10 or 11.

Is Windows 7 better for capturing?
Win 10 and 11 work fine here; never had a reason to keep Win 7.

Should I be using (direct show) or (vfw)
Definitely Direct show (there isn't a VFW option for the Live 2/CX23100)

How stupid, inefficient and insane is my presses?
Assuming you mean process, not stupid at all for a mid-quality process. You can export MP4 ie H264) straight out of VDub2. Just make sure you set the Audio to Full Processing mode before you start the "Save Video...: process so you can choose the AAC format for your MP4.

VDub's deinterlacer, while great for doubling the framerate, isn't as good as QTGMC, but that requires use of AVISynth.

Re the jumping, try capturing with AmarecTV. I have a guide here.

utvideo 422/601(not sure if that is the right option)
Yes, the FourCC code for the one you want is ULY2. That's YUV422 BT.601 VCM.

Doesn’t anyone think maybe a good start would be a better VHS ie S-VHS machine?
Not necessarily one with TBC, but almost any good condition Mitsubishi 7xx or later JVC S model? Both affordable.

There are no reasons to add a S-VHS VCR in a workflow and choose a model without TBC. You can maybe save some money but you have to add another device for time base correction, which is not for free and introducing degradation.

Lollo, obviously a TBC equipped machine is preferred, I covet mine, but certainly a Daewoo (any Daewoo) can be easily bested by a decent JVC/Mitsu S-video unit and improve results w/o being a budget buster. But I’ll shuddup now before I’m taken to the woodshed for a beating.
