  1. Hi there, i have a question.

I am encoding a HDR UHD Blu-ray and reducing the resolution to 1920x1080.

In FastFlix i tick "Remove HDR" and select BT.709 for color primaries, transfer characteristics and matrix coefficients. This all looks good in the mediainfo for the final result.

However there is a line in the mediainfo above these that says "HDR Format: SMPTE ST 2086"

So my question is, is this "ok"? Is the HDR actually removed? Or is there another software/HDR remover that i should or could use instead?

  2. You could use clever FFmpeg-GUI.

  3. What is the best way to convert 4K HDR to 4K SDR from a full quality 4K Blu-ray ripped with MakeMKV?

I want it to be a 1:1 copy of the ripped MKV but convert 4K HDR to 4K SDR with no video quality loss.

It won't be 1:1 as hdr is metadata applied to the compressed stream. Remove only will cause extremely off colors. You'll have to reencode and use a filter like dghdrtosdr, a ffmpeg chain, or a program that has a setting to renencode in sdr colorspace from hdr. Avidemux can preview with it but haven't tested the encoding part of it.
if all else fails read the manual

  5. Here's an example:

On the left, an HDR video without the HDR data and on the left the same after some tone mapping with DGs HDRtoSDR.

Just a reminder as an FYI, only 4k Blurays support HDR, standard HD Blurays do NOT.
