External DVD reading discs but not burning

Hello. New user here. I have a problem burning on my newly bought external DVD. It's reads all the discs I put into it but somehow when I'm trying to burn some videos, I got this problem. Is this a software problem or a hardware problem? I'm using Windows 10 OS.

The error is telling you that your optical drive can not burn the disk you are trying to use because the speed of the disk is wrong for your optical drive.
I have never had this happen. I have had a very old disk not work . I believe because a newer optical drive no longer supported the manufacturers disk code.
Read the specifications for your optical drive. Match a new disk with the correct speed to that.

It can also depend on the chip in the enclosure.Is this enclosure old ?
Even if the optical drive is new ?

Give ImgBurn a try for the write (burn).

1. Can you advise of make/model of this optical drive.

2. Assuming that you did, indeed, purchase a burner and not a simple player, the advice of using imgburn is a good one. What program were you using ?


3. The rule of thumb is to burn at no more than 50% of the rated burn-speed of the blank media. Thus 16x media should only be burnt at a maimum of 8x.


4. And, finally, that the drive does support the media. That is to say that you are not attempting to burn dvd-R when the drive only supports dvd+R or vice-versa.

I got hold of some old media one time & the drive would not recognize the MID.
But that is an unusual situation.

ImgBurn will list the drive capabilities as far as the + or - media it can read & write.
It does not list the speeds the drive is capable of reading or writing.

I plug the power source of the external to the PC. Do I plug it somewhere else?

Try again. But this time set your burn speed to 4x or, better still 2.4x and NOT MAX which appears to be 8x

Unless that drive supports an external power supply/adapter you can only plug the cable into the PC.


And BTW what blank media are you using ?

I tried the generic ones. But I also recently bought an HP DVD-R from Taiwan.

Tried the 4x and 2.4x but not working. Does ImgBurn or DVDStyler come with 1x burning?

Are you sure you tried with a lower setting?

Try installing a virtual drive like Virtual clone drive
Try mounting your .iso.
If it will mount does it have the DVD format ergo: AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folders.
If it does are there .bup , .ifo , & .vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder ?
If all that is there. Try to use ImgBurn in Build mode (Write files/folders to disc in EZ Picker).
From the mounted .iso in the virtual drive.

From the information your max disk speed is 8x so try 4 x.

The Power Calibration Area Errors can indicate a bad optical drive but not always.

Looks like bad media. Try switching to another disc brand. Had the same problem a while ago with some cheap crap brand. Changed to another brand of discs, worked perfectly

I don't know if there will help you but might.
There were written with my MATSHITA drive that is in an USB enclosure.
I used a RW disk so I wouldn't waste a disk.This disk will only accept 2.4x.

I believe that the ELBYCDIO.DLL came from the Virtual Clone Drive install.
It has been there so long I don't remember for sure.
You have to set ImgBurn to use it if you have it.
Tools/Settings/ I/O tab select: ElbyCDIO - Elaborate Bytes

This one was from an .iso file using Write mode:

I missed reading the above.

I do not know if this would cause a problem.
I guess lack of enough power could.
All of my external enclosures have a power source.
One plugs strait into the house outlet & one is powered with a "wall wart" or power adapter.

Is your enclosure powered by your PCs USB inputs ?
If so are there two usb plugs on your enclosure ?
