Hello. New user here. I have a problem burning on my newly bought external DVD. It's reads all the discs I put into it but somehow when I'm trying to burn some videos, I got this problem. Is this a software problem or a hardware problem? I'm using Windows 10 OS.

    Hope someone can help. Thanks.

  2. The error is telling you that your optical drive can not burn the disk you are trying to use because the speed of the disk is wrong for your optical drive.
I have never had this happen. I have had a very old disk not work . I believe because a newer optical drive no longer supported the manufacturers disk code.
Read the specifications for your optical drive. Match a new disk with the correct speed to that.

It can also depend on the chip in the enclosure. Is this enclosure old ?
Even if the optical drive is new ?

Give ImgBurn a try for the write (burn).

  3. I'll try to do that ImgBurn and get back with the results.

    1. Can you advise of make/model of this optical drive.

    2. Assuming that you did, indeed, purchase a burner and not a simple player, the advice of using imgburn is a good one. What program were you using ?

    3. The rule of thumb is to burn at no more than 50% of the rated burn-speed of the blank media. Thus 16x media should only be burnt at a maimum of 8x.

    4. And, finally, that the drive does support the media. That is to say that you are not attempting to burn dvd-R when the drive only supports dvd+R or vice-versa.

  6. @ DB83,
I got hold of some old media one time & the drive would not recognize the MID.
But that is an unusual situation.

ImgBurn will list the drive capabilities as far as the + or - media it can read & write.
It does not list the speeds the drive is capable of reading or writing.

  7. Good day everyone. I used DVDStyler and got this "mkisofs: Broken pipe. cannot fwrite 32768*1"

I used ImgBurn and got this. "E 18:01:35 Failed to Write Image!
    E 18:01:35 Operation Failed! - Duration: 00:00:35"

I plug the power source of the external to the PC. Do I plug it somewhere else?

Sorry I only replied today cause of power outage.

Try again. But this time set your burn speed to 4x or, better still 2.4x and NOT MAX which appears to be 8x

Unless that drive supports an external power supply/adapter you can only plug the cable into the PC.

And BTW what blank media are you using ?
    Quote Quote
  9. I tried the generic ones. But I also recently bought an HP DVD-R from Taiwan.
    Quote Quote
  10. Tried the 4x and 2.4x but not working. Does ImgBurn or DVDStyler come with 1x burning?
    Quote Quote
  11. The ImgBurn log shows this:
    I 18:01:00 Write Speed: MAX
Are you sure you tried with a lower setting?

Try installing a virtual drive like Virtual clone drive
    Try mounting your .iso.
If it will mount does it have the DVD format ergo: AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folders.
If it does are there .bup , .ifo , & .vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder ?
If all that is there. Try to use ImgBurn in Build mode (Write files/folders to disc in EZ Picker).
From the mounted .iso in the virtual drive.

From the information your max disk speed is 8x so try 4 x.

The Power Calibration Area Errors can indicate a bad optical drive but not always.

Looks like bad media. Try switching to another disc brand. Had the same problem a while ago with some cheap crap brand. Changed to another brand of discs, worked perfectly

I don't know if there will help you but might.
There were written with my MATSHITA drive that is in an USB enclosure.
    I used a RW disk so I wouldn't waste a disk.This disk will only accept 2.4x.

I believe that the ELBYCDIO.DLL came from the Virtual Clone Drive install.
It has been there so long I don't remember for sure.
You have to set ImgBurn to use it if you have it.

    I missed reading the above.

I do not know if this would cause a problem.
I guess lack of enough power could.
All of my external enclosures have a power source.
One plugs strait into the house outlet & one is powered with a "wall wart" or power adapter.

Is your enclosure powered by your PCs USB inputs ?
If so are there two usb plugs on your enclosure ?

You have to set ImgBurn to use it if you have it.
Tools/Settings/ I/O tab select: ElbyCDIO - Elaborate Bytes
I'll try to find if ELBYCDIO.dll is available in my PC.

Sounds like a power issue, or the write laser is bad.

If the enclosure has two usb plugs try plugging the power one into a charger that has an output over 1.5A.

I'm more of a could be a power problem.
I have a surge protector similar to this one: surge protector
That is what I would use to power your enclosure.

Maybe the drive I bought is bad? Is Windows 10 blocking the burning capability?

I think I already asked this with no reply (if there was one then I apologise). But kindly advise of the blank media you are using.

Well you can be sure that HP does not manufacture these disks. But 'HP' is rather a generic name. Can you expend on that or link to the site you acquired them.

The report suggests that the burn expected 1x media whereas the burner does not support that write speed. Sure. 1x media has existed (when I first started burning that is what I had) but these days 16x disks are the 'norm' but can be written at 8x which is what the burner appears to support.

And quality of blank media is also important. Do not use generic brands. Verbatim (but not life series) are well respected. If your burner still does not then function then you def know it is faulty.

To throw something extra into the mix, once you've migrated to house power for your external DVD reader/writer and obtained better media, you should consider trying a different USB port on your computer (if available) and making certain that the computer is idle (no other programs running) when burning.

Here is the blank DVD I bought. I somehow migrated to house power during the burning I posted above.

  26. This is some information ImgBurn is giving you:
Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-003-00)
    Destination Media Supported Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x
The drive only supports writing these discs at 2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x.

I would set the write(burn) for 4x for this DVD+R disc.

This is some information( on a blank HP disc I have & I know it is not the same as yours.
I got it from the upper right side of ImgBurn.Set to Write mode.
The main thing I would like to see on your disc is: Status: Empty
To make sure you did not accidentally write to it.
    Disc Information:
    Status: Empty
    State of Last Session: Empty
    Erasable: No
    Free Sectors: 2,295,104
    Free Space: 4,700,372,992 bytes
    Free Time: 510:03:29 (MM:SS:FF)
    Next Writable Address: 0
    MID: CMC MAG-M01-00
    Supported Write Speeds: 8x, 12x, 16x

Do you have another disc you could try?
Even if it is the same brand.
Do you have another DVD rip you could try?
In case what you are trying to write is corrupt.

    ^^ Slight problem my friend.

The OP is using a DVD-R disk not +R.

And that cover tells us nothing about the write speeds of the media so tried. I have looked at various sites to attempt to find the specs for this drive. Whether it supports DVD-R and DVD+R. But what I have found is that you are not alone in finding this drive reads but does not write. So I must assume that the drive is NOT a burner. End of.
    Quote Quote
  28. @DB83,
The jewel case in the picture is for a DVD-R disk & I saw that.
I trust ImgBurn's log for the disc.
    Post # 7: I 18:01:00 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-003-00)
    Post # 20 first write:I 15:26:27 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-003-00)
Second write: I 15:27:58 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-003-00)

This is what ImgBurn shows to be the drive:MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ890AS 1.00 (E (USB)
As best as I can tell this is the same drive Amazon has.
    https://www.amazon.com/Computer-Internal-Tray-Loading-Optical-Matshita/dp/B081QYZZZT

    These are the Write specs:
    Write Speed:
    CD-R: 24x
    CD-RW: 16x
    DVD-RAM: 5x
    DVD-R (Single Layer/Dual Layer): 8x (SL) / 6x (DL)
    DVD+R (Single Layer/Double Layer): 8x (SL) / 6x (DL)
    DVD-RW: 6x
    DVD+RW: 8x

The problem could be the drivers that the OPs OS has Microsoft Windows 8 Core x64 Edition (6.2, Build 9200)
This OSs listed for this drive are XP & Vista.
Then add to that it is in a USB external enclosure.

An external enclosure I have with a Samsung optical drive won't burn CDs.
It will read CDs & burn DVDS fine.
I tracked down the problem to the enclosure chip.
If I install this Samsung optical drive to a different enclosure or internally it will burn a CD.
So the enclosure chip can make a difference.

    @cholla

You may be right and the bit that does the real work would be the same as the one that the OP has.

But what I would like to see is the ACTUAL unit the OP has (or a link to its purchase). And it seems strange to me that several individuals have burning issues. Surely they do all do not have the same unit and if the unit supports usb power out of the box then it should work out of the box without recourse to either alternative power or another casing. In either of these scenarios the unit is faulty and should be returned.
