You mean it will be too short for the GV-USB2 to span between the S-Video and the RCAs?
Or too short in terms that the USB would not be long enough?

I'm planning to have my laptop next to the VCR, so I guess this shouldn't be a problem, right?

  2. For the GV-USB2 the length of the analog cables is about 6 inch (15cm) each, the length of the USB cable is about 19 inch (50cm).
Whether the length of the analog cables is adequate depends on the layout of the connectors on your VCR. Should be ok for the HRS9500

I have the GV-USB2. You will have no trouble, with any VCR, spanning across the sockets for RCA and S-Video. I have numerous different-brand VCRs here and the GV video and audio cables can connect to them all with no issues.

In the highly unlikely case where you have a weird VCR with video and audio sockets too-widely spaced, just use one red+white RCA/cinch cable for the audio and put the S-Video straight-out (or vice versa). Be careful of tension on the S-video port of the VCR if you use that male-male gender bender. You don't want to wreck that port.

I meant by too short is if your VCR is high from the cabinet or desk the capture device will be hanging from its cable pigtail which can put stress on it and damage it over time, If it sits on the surface then it shouldn't be a problem.

  5. Finally, I captured my first VHS.

I would like to know if my VirtualDub settings for capturing PAL tapes are fine:

    Device:
As video and audio source, I selected the "GV-USB2".

    Video:
    "Video source" I selected "S-Video".

    "Caputre pin > Stream Format"
    Frame Rate: 25
    Color Space: YUY2
    Output Size: 720 x x576
    I Frame Interval: 15
    Quality:

"Capture filter > Video Decoder > Video Standard", I needed to select "PAL-B", otherwise I wouldn't see any preview and I wouldn't be able to start the recording.

"Compression > Huffyuv v2.1.1", for YUY2 and RGB I selected the fastest option.

    "Set custom video format", 720 x 576 with YUY2 4:2:2 interleaved

    Audio:
    "Compression > PCM"

    Bottom right:
    48.00 KHz, 16-bit, stero
    25 FPS integral

    VCR (S9500):
    TBC/NR: active

The finale AVI file looks like this:

    Some questions:
    1) Does this look normal?
    Image

    2) Even when I recorded 44:30 min, and MediaInfo also shows it like this, when I open the AVI file via VLC, the video length is more than 29 h. Is this a VLC issue, or is something wrong with my recording?

    3) When I'm not wrong, PAL tapes should be recorded in 720 x 576. This would be 5:4, but VHS is 4:3. Is this because of square pixels? How should this be adjusted?

    4) What are the best QTGMC deinterlacing settings? I want to use the "placebo preset" and double the frame rate. Is there anything else needed in post?
