i'm trying to download Kdenlive to edit my movies etc.
i can't seem to do it.
I google Kdenlive download, > then live on download,> then get a window saying...
"The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft -verified app"
Can anyone here advise me on how to download it, please?

I just downloaded it without any problems from this link on VideoHelp website
https://www.videohelp.com/software/Kdenlive
I haven't installed it because I don't need it. -
TBF. I can also download it, but that's when the trouble starts, it doesn't show a shortcut icon on the desktop for me to get into it.
I'm running Windows 10, not sure if that might be the problem (It shouldn't be should it?).Last edited by foxleybob; 5th Oct 2024 at 11:09.

Thank you, Dave, I have already set this up. So not that then
OK, I've decided to use "Open shot" for now, until I can get around the problem of loading Kdenlive.
I guess it'll give me a bit of experience for when I can actually use KDL or whatever
Thanks allLast edited by foxleybob; 5th Oct 2024 at 11:42.

Then it may be your anti-virus interfering with the download. The default setting of most A/V
is to assume the user is not capable of using his judgement, so it decides for you.
(some variation of "reputational" status based on a files rarity)
Assuming the setup file is visible in your downloads folder, have you tried right clicking it and running as administrator?
Have you changed anything related to UAC ?Last edited by davexnet; 5th Oct 2024 at 13:50.

I only use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes but not any other antivirus

If you install the Portable (=STANDALONE) version you will have to look for the folder where the program is "unzipped" manually and create a shortcut by yourself
This is the official download site..
https://kdenlive.org/en/download/
And this is the direct link to the "normal" installer for the last version (from the official site).. https://download.kde.org/stable/kdenlive/24.08/windows/kdenlive-24.08.1.exe
Launching that file should create all shortcuts and start menu entries for you.. at the end of the installation (never tried myself, I've always used the Portable = STANDALONE version).Last edited by krykmoon; 6th Oct 2024 at 07:22.

Erm.
I tried the stand alone link/box, and got a folder on the desktop with a folder containing these.......
bin,> lib>, share,> licence then setup
so I assumed it would be setup, which I clicked on, but nothing showed.
Hope you or anyone can make sense of that?
Yes. I know, I'm a dummy sorry.Last edited by foxleybob; 6th Oct 2024 at 09:00.

If you downloaded/unzipped the standalone version .. you have to create a shortcut on your desktop for the file "kdenlive.exe" that you will find in the bin folder
anyway.. the installer version is the one that does everything (creating desktop shortcuts and menu entries) for you..
"Standalone" is for people who exactly know what they're doing... -
I see, so that lets me off (I'm not sure what I'm doing)
Thabks for that -
OK, I've now followed your orders , and managed to get it from the bin. But I couldn't find the Desktop icon one?
at least I have itpinned to the taskbar, to learn about it.
Thank you guys for all your help
I did download "Open Shot" as well cause I couldn't get Kdenlive.
How do they compare, please, considering I'm a beginner/dummy?Last edited by foxleybob; 7th Oct 2024 at 08:01.

In the BIN folder there's a kdenlive.exe file: drag it to the destkop and the job is done (for the shortcut)
Didn't tried Open Shot recently (it doesn't have a portable/standalone version and the installer has an outdated version of blender included that i don't want on my pc ) : I tried it some years ago and it was millions of miles behind kdenlive.
If they should provide a portable/standalone version WITHOUT those outdated version of Blender included I would be glad to try it again.
Anyway.. Kdenlive is the best opensource NLE at the moment... and the most similar thing to Premiere you will find.
You can use it for very complex editing works (it has bins - nested timelines - ).. it's without any doubt the most powerful opensource NLE you can get for free nowadays.
Shotcut is decent for some easy editing jobs but it still misses a lot of "pro" (so-to-say) features... like BINS: you can't edit anything too complex without such an essential function for an NLE
(Kdenlive is much much better under quite any aspect). -
-
Mainly for 3d, yes.
But it's a very complex software that does a lot of things: it has a Compositor module for compositing and also a NLE Video Editor module for video editing.. and even an excellent 2d Drawing module integrated that works seamlessly with the 3d core of the software (and each of these modules is becoming better and better with every new release)..
A great piece of software.. and it's 100% opensource and free. -
Erm.
sorry guys I have lost Kdnlive, and open-shot, weird I know!!
Not sure if Windows Update would be responsible for this or not? They seemed to have disappeared since then (coincidence?)
I'm only interested in Kdenlive now, but I couldn't find the "Bin" in the download, so would someone explain to this dummy how to put me through it again step by step, please?
Thank you

Download it again from here (and nowhere else!) : https://kdenlive.org/en/download/

That's where I DID download it from Brian thanks.
On the "standalone link I have unzipped the files and got this.......
"Windows protected your PCMicrosoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognised app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.
More info
Don't run"
So I didn't.
So I'm still at SQUARE ONE.Last edited by foxleybob; 11th Nov 2024 at 11:03.

Who's in charge of your PC ? Yourself? Or Microsoft?
You can always disable Smartscreen temporarily -
Now you can see why I use Linux, it avoids all the 'big brother' nonsense while still being secure.
Note that it says 'unrecognised' not that it is dangerous, it just means the developer has not paid Micro$oft to add it to their list.

I love it when a plan comes together!
-
That's because Microsoft in the last few years put a much MUCH higher fee to make a developer "certified" and most of the opensource projects/developers can't afford to pay that huge amount of money..
If you run any opensource software nowadays.. 99% of them will show that Windows Defender screen the first time you execute them. It doesn't mean anything else that : "we didn't pay for the - absurdly high - certification fee that Microsoft exact from us to be recognized as certified developers".
100% totally meaningless, security wise..
Kdenlive is a serious and very reliable piece of software.Last edited by krykmoon; 12th Nov 2024 at 12:44.

Edit.....
I Googled stopping Smartscreen and got some info from "How to Geek", which pointed to the Windows tab on keyboard> went ahead with that, and then it showed Kdenlive, so I clicked on it (not expecting much)
But low & behold it started up, so I got it at last pinned to startbar. Although I'm not sure how. lol
I'm running twin monitors so I can watch YouTube tutorials while working on it.
Happy bunny again.
But would still appreciate any tips/hints on this software, please?Last edited by foxleybob; 14th Nov 2024 at 07:56.
