I open a 2960x2160 mkv file with avidemux, it takes a while to load and when done it crashes. well actually the avidemux window closes with no message so I assume it's a crash. Thoughts and or more info needed to resolve? -thank you

  2. Try to open this video with another editor, g.e. virtualdub2 or clever FFmpeg-GUI.

I did try other editors with success. Thank you for your reply, however it does not help with this issue.

  4. Remux it with another editor and then retry to open it in avidemux.

I'm not too bright but does remux mean producing a different format from the original, e.g. mkv > mp4? If so, no thanks.

It means to repackage the assets. To put the video, audio and subtitles (if present)
into a new container even if it's the same file type
NO encoding tkaes place, no loss of quality.
Open mkvtoolnix GUI, drag your source into the window,
and create a new MKV file. Use that in Avidemux.
If it still unexpectedly closes, open the Windows Event viewer, look at Application
and System events at the corresponding timestamp for any related errors
