I want to try my hand menu creation, but it seems I need stills and/or a moving sequence. Can anyone tell me how to go about capturing both of these? Thanks in advance.

If you have PowerDVD or something similar it's pretty easy - there's a capture button or key. Just make sure that harware acceleration is turned off or you'll get blank screenshots.
As for a moving sequences you could always cut one out from the rip you do with TMPGenc "Merge & Cut" feature or set a range to encode.
