  1. Does anyone know if its possible to stop these monthly charge, unlimited access, dial up accounts from logging off every 2 hours. Its a real pain in the ass when downloading.

  4. There is quite a few programs that do it.

Have a look at some of these and decide what one will be the best one for you.
You may have to try a few of them though to get one that works proplerly on your connection.

Alternatively if your on NTL then get their broadband service.

    Hope the link helps though.

heh...you pay $25/month to get slow, crappy dial-up service just so that you can get disconnected every 2 hours? (i think it was as fast as 30 min of inactivity..but i'm not sure)

that's crazy, i guess they have to pay for all that free trial cds they send out everyday (i'm not complaining cuz they give out some good dvd cases )

  7. I have been with NTL for about 2 years and for that time the cost was nothing per month unlimited access. Which I thought was a pretty good deal. Although they have just started (this month) charging 5 pounds per month. Still pretty reasonable I think. Like I say I am going to go to broadband, 128K is 15 pounds per month, but no point paying the installation charges untill I move.

I realise your comments are aimed at AOL, just pointing out that some dial up accounts are good value.

  8. Is it a manditory 2hour limit? I mean, will you get disconnected even if actively surfing the internet (not downloading) every two hours? If it is, then there's nothing except switching providers that will stop that.

If you are getting disconnected every two hours because the server doesn't see you actively surfing (not downloading or in chat rooms), then I can help you. Just let me know which it is.

  10. If it's disconnecting no matter what every two hours, then call tech support and find out if this is normal. If it a manditory 2 hour disconnect, look for another ISP, if it's not, then they need to do something on thier end.

Also, if you are thinking of going DSL or Broadband, check to see if they have a manditory disconnect time, also. I use to work for tech support of US West.net (before the got bought out by Qwest), and they had a manditory disconnect on some of thier DSL packages after 2 hours. I don't know if it is a common practice among other DSL and broadband providers, but get the details before you sign up. It's not fun paying a lot more for a faster connection if you automaticly get shut down every two hours.

  11. Hey go to broad band its so easy to hook up it took me like 5min to do so i have had it for about a week now those once 8 plus hour download times are next to nothing now.Buy your own modem to i saved about $120.00 doing so versus buying one from my cable company.

  12. The downside to Broadband (unless it's been fixed) was that your speed depended on how many people in your area were not connected at the time. Such as, if you had broadband and was connected, then your neighbor (whom has his own broadband) connected at the same time, your speed would decrease.

Before you do get another dial-up account, DSL, or broadband account, check the company out. Do not sign any long term contracts and look for any hidden charges within your contract for early terminations. Do not rely on what the sales person says to you. Demand documentation on all features and charges.

  15. Well I've decided I cant wait and am having broadband installed next week. Free installation and 25 pounds a month for 512k, always online.

Do you guys on broadband use a usb connection or an ethernet card. The cable modem that I am getting has the option to use either.
