  1. I gave the BBC another try and it looked like I was getting somewhere and then it failed saying:

    ConnectionError "Failed to request the m3u8 document"

    Thank you to everyone that gives me advice. It is very kind of you to take the time and I think others learn along with me and are grateful as well.

    You need a good VPN UK. BBC iPlayer is very sensitive about this.

    It is strange as I can sign into the BBC website and watch videos with my Windscribe VPN but it fails with Devine. Thankfully with a bit of effort I can get the videos with YT-DLP by analizing information from the VideoDownload Helper.

    Try without a proxy
    devine dl --no-proxy iP https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/...

    From your browser, you can download in 720p, and through devine - 1080p 50fps (or even 4K)

  5. Hi all,

    As I managed to find a certificate for 4K BBC, I am trying to use devine to grab a stream that I know to be UHD (based on my TV saying it is), but it's not able to download the 4K stream.

    I run
    Code:
    devine cfg --list
    My config looks like this:

    Code:
    directories:
      downloads: D:\devine\downloads
      services: D:\devine-services\services
      temp: D:\devine\temp
      wvds: D:\devine\WVDs
      logs: D:\devine\logs

    cdm:
      default: ANDROID_4464_l3

    credentials:
      {REMOVED}

    services:
      iP:
        cert: D:\devine\Certs\bbciplayer.pem
    I use the following command to try and get the 4k stream (with debug turned on via -d flag):

    Code:
    devine -d dl -v H.265 iP https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002f21d/glastonbury-alanis-morissette
    And here's the output that I receive:

    Code:
                           / __ \/ ____/ |  / /  _/ | / / ____/
                          / / / / __/  | | / // //  |/ / __/
                         / /_/ / /___  | |/ // // /|  / /___

  13. Iplayer service has been updated. Only a select few sets from Glastonbury are actually offered in UHD, but those that are should work now.

    It's getting increasingly difficult to update these services since Devine is old and I don't really use it anymore, so updates might be coming to an end soon. But as far as I can tell most current issues seem to be user errors rather than the services themselves, so hopefully they'll last a while.

    Thank you for all the work you have put into the Devine Services and Freevine before that. Since you don't use Devine anymore have you made something better and if so can others go on this journey with you as well? Regardless once again thank you and myself and other are grateful for your Devine services and your guidance.

    Also TUBI it has a terrific and vast collection but Devine has some hiccups where on the website certain shows exist and Devine says they don't. For example "Kojak". Sometimes you can get shows one episode at at time with WidevineProxy 2 that Devine can't seem to get either because it is only available in the United States yet other shows that are in the United States it can get without being blocked.

    I am also interested to know what the current 'best' tool is, particularly for BBC iPlayer as I see Hidden Planet (a new 'Life in the Undergrowth') will be with us in the near future and I love getting that UHD quality saved to my NAS.

    To be honest, there is no best tool publicly available at the moment. Things change fast when it comes to ripping from streaming services, especially in the last few months. Scripts and tools are shared and adapted into various branches, so everyone's sitting on their own version of a tool that'll work for their specific requirements. Vinetrimmer currently has the most publicly available services by far since its initial leak already contained a bunch of them, but it exists in about 100 different iterations and I've yet to see one that's great. Devine never really gained any momentum since no services were included, and with the original dev stopping work on it, it's kind of dead in the water. It still provides a great base for further development, though, and there have been some efforts to update it but nothing official as far as I can tell.

    In the end, it's always going to be a chase to keep up with the latest developments. And since public knowledge forces streaming services to adjust their security, the best tools will be kept private as much as possible.

    The good news is that, for iPlayer specifically, no DRM is used at all. So it should stay unaffected for the most part. The main issue with that one is that their API is infuriating and there'll always be something to fix. But my latest update should hopefully be able to get UHD for the titles that offer it.

    Ain't that the truth. I guess in part to not be so reliant on any one individual. You are a rare breed, in sharing what you have built for those not willing or not able to do their own thing.

    Today, I noticed the words on the top of devine repository:
    https://github.com/devine-dl/devine
    This repository was archived by the owner on Jul 9, 2025. It is now read-only.
    Threrefore, would someone want to fork the devine repository to a new official repository. and become the new maintainer?
    Often, I see many small bugs that are posted, with small solutions, and those small fixes need to be applied.

    Great idea! But good luck with it. Sometimes projects not related to piracy, that languish, are picked up by some young, eager, up-and-coming coder, who needs stuff for their CV.

    But that's likely not gong to happen here, is it; who wants piracy on their CV? It probably will get picked up, but by a dreamer who feels a need to puff themselves, and it will soon flounder after they realize they are out of their depth. We've had examples of posters here who start something with a promise and then promptly disappear.

    So shame about Devine really. Devine was a chance to centralize and formalize everything but now there will be lots of forks, each with a small fix, headed on divergent pathways - just like vinetrimmer.

    There was a vote on a Discord channel recently. Guys were asked which they preferred - Devine or Vinetrimmer.
    Vinetrimmer won handsomely and for the life of me, I cannot understand why!

    Vinetrimmer doesn't work when you install it - no matter where you get it from. It's usually provided with binaries - and you have no idea of their authenticity. Does that ffmpeg binary you been given set-up a back door in your machine, when it's innocently run by you? Who knows? And you cannot tell. (Never use the provided binaries!!)

    Loads of services are provided. No-one is responsible for the varied services maintenance. So again, the Vinetrimmer version you get will have services reporting errors on first use.

    There are answers to all of this, but its not for me, a grey and wrinkly, on her way out, to tell others what to do. But I have ideas! History shows teams work best, they can share the load and being young, with fast brains can produce fantastic work. But history also shows young teams have individuals with massive egos so they quickly fall out with each other and take their toys home. Then the team disbands. But that is probably part of the solution - set up teams on a project with a fairly fixed term - do your stint, take some kudos, and move on. Plan and organise the team for short periods of work and then replacement. All of that though needs personnel, first to set up a team and then to make it thrive. And make it a co-operative - no single leader - take group decisions by majority. Only there probably aren't enough doers around to keep anything organized going for any length of time. Perhaps setting up a group that takes small donations to encourage what is really some hard onerous coding may be the way. Who knows?

    But I am a pessimistic idealist; humans being human and asking 'what's in it for me' will likely scupper anything, won't it? After all, I can think of only 5 people, off the top of my head, who regularly give anything for free to this site. Everyone else just takes and complains. HellYes, for example, has had sixteen and a half thousand downloads for its last iteration here; I've had probably less than 10 messages of thanks; loads of requests for help from people who don't think to read the help-guides included. In the end, one wonders why do it?

    But things have slowly changed here. No-one used to post scripts; now, though, there are many solutions; so maybe there is hope!

    I've stopped posting here in the main; don't expect much else! Except I've got a repository on Github with a Vinetrimmer version that now works for me. Presently it is private - keeping it secure against take-down notices - but I could make it public, but only for for a few hours, if there was interest. But that still solves nothing; I don't plan on updating vinetrimmer much longer.

  23. I don't care about a CV, and in general I am disappointed in a world where you can't just graduate and get employed the next day (the need of which is also disappointing). Not going to play these stupid games with no winning move existing. If absolutely needed, will delegate this task to LLMs.

    What I care about is that GitHub denies people it doesn't like. I use Tor, and it doesn't like Tor, and says my account is being flagged, and I have to contact support. Except I don't want to talk to their support. I don't trust these people from the beginning. Or should I just register under my "real" name so that it serves as invitation for the police to arrest me?

    Then I have difficulties to contact the people from Git commits too, because their e-mail addresses are on some big e-mail provider like Gmail, which blocks small e-mail providers because it also dislikes them. Resolved by registering on ProtonMail, but I think it is also an evil service.

    VideoHelp also had some weird CAPTCHA stuff last time, so I think will delete my account a while after my business with DRM-related tools is over.

    And then there are some non-popular Git services (not necessarily in the USA, so DMCA takedown is probably not a concern) which just let you register, though the ones which don't require e-mail/CAPTCHA verification are usually full of spam repositories (though you can use search to filter them out). But then it is not certain if content uploaded there can be found by anyone.

    There is an instance with a relevant name, maybe upload it there?

    That's why we have SHA checksum.

    That's why we have a Firewall, Microsoft Defender plus SHA checksum.

    C'est la vie. People change. Couples get divorce. Ask Paul McCartney about John and Yoko.

    Maybe. The YT-DLP project makes a compelling case.

    But I am a pessimistic idealist
    True, but you are also a cockeyed optimist i.e. staying positive while many are not and being buoyed by the anticipation of brighter, sunny days ahead. You're a kind and generous individual who keeps on giving and giving until there is no more to give.

    To paraphrase Kipling

    You dream—and not make dreams your master;
    You think—and not make thoughts your aim;
    You meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    You bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    And watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools.

    You talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    And walk with Kings—without losing the common touch,
    Neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    All persons count with you, but none too much;
    You can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run.

    Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And—which is more—you’re a Mensch, my Girl!

    Have a great day, Angela, and thanks for all the fish.

  25. Well archive what you can while you can and be thankful for it. I am kind of glad that about 95 percent of the movies and televisions shows they make now I have no interest in watching much less archiving. On the other hand I am obsessive and compulsive so I am driven to get what I like. Give me one great show like "Ironside" for a thousand of those reality shows. If they tied me up and grilled me to confess to something I would probably confess to just about anything guilty or not so I wouldn't have to watch "Housewives of blankity blank" or "The Kardashians". I think it is awful of all the Star Trek Alien Races they had to give "The Kardashians" their own show. I have never watched an episode of those shows but I know I would hate watching them.

    Well, there are not many who can wax-lyrical and reference Brendan Behan; perhaps that other 'devil' Jack, then? The real Gromyko WAS Minister of Foreign Affairs for Russia, an eon ago.
