I burn to both cdr and cd-rw from my own experience it depends on the quality of your discs, allways get the best discs you can afford.
I have had the same problem with cdr discs some work and some dont ,I dont know why but i have never had a problem with cd-rw.
When i am playing around and checking out new settings i always use cd-rw , if i make a mistake i just wipe it then try again..

Check the DVD player compatability list, you may find that that player will only play CDRW or a particular colour of CDR

Dude, Burn your VCD on a CD-RW & see if the thing works, THEN burn it on a CD-R. I trached a lot of CD-R's until I figured out that if I screw up a CD-RW, I can just Erase & Rewrite it.
Most DVD Players will play both CD-R & CD-RW, even my Sh***y Mintek DVD Player will play CD-RW's.

There's still a surprising amount of players out there that won't play CDR

As above.
