  1. I have noticed that after VirtualDub2 there is texture loss in some textures. I was wondering if this is normal also if its not normal what can I do to prevent the texture loss? The yellow circles in the image show examples of the differences. The one on the right is the one after VirtualDub.

  2. Common reasons are bad processing / filtering , and/or bad encoding settings

Since you did not provide any details specific to your case - the generic solution would be to use better processing and/or better encoding settings such as higher bitrate

This is from without any filters that I tested before applying any. Bitrate that I used was h.264, audio at 192 kb/s, video was done at 17 CRF. This is from a vhs recording so I converted the video using about the same settings. What would be a good bitrate setting to preserve the details?

If the only difference was encoding , then use a lower CRF value. CRF 0 would be lossless for 8bit AVC encoding but the filesizes will be very large.

The screenshots are obviously not the same frame, and the "after" has prominent letterboxing - so it doesn't look like encoding was the only difference

I've tried using a lower CRF value at about 15 and its still the same. Both videos have Black bars I had to minimize them both to show the differences

I see the name of the second video has "temporal" in it. Have you applied the temporal smoother filter? If so, that is why you have texture loss. It "smooths" out the noise but in doing so, removes some fine details. Play with the slider and you'll see the effect.
