  1. Im having a play around with the avisynth sharpening filters in Hybrid. Theres several of them and was wondering if theres one thats recommended over the others, particularly for vhs capture video?

Depends on how much you denoised the source file. Overall, lsfmod should work fine. Check the faces, where you will first notice possible excessive denoising combined with too much sharpening.

  3. Ok thanks, I havent tried that one yet, Ill give it a go next. Im not really seeing much difference with the ones that Ive tried so far.

    Here a comparison using
    Code:
    LSFmod(ss_x=1.5, ss_y=1.5, secure=false, Spwr=2, SdmpHi=0, soothe=false, keep=25, edgemaskHQ=true)
on a denoised video; the effect is evident.

LSFmod is designed to do not introduce excessive halos.

    For latest versions I use
    Code:
    LSFmod(defaults="slow")

The question is what do you expect. As so often less is sometimes more. It's easy to spoil the video with sharpening artefacts.
VHS is still VHS. It will however usually benefit from chroma denoising and chroma sharpening.

I was probably expecting too much, especially as the video is bad quality to begin with, its from an LP recording.

The first clip is what Im working with, The second has been denoised and sharpened with Lollo's settings. Im not sure if the video is benefiting from the sharpening or not?

@Leanoric, I can't open your Go Fishing 2 file in VDub or my NLE. It seems there's something wrong with it because I can open some of your other LAGS AVIs with no problems.

Thats strange, Ive just tried opening it vdub2 and it works for me.

  9. Ok Ive just tried Lollos sharpening settings with TemporalDegrain instead of HQDN3D which I was using before. Its a much better result.

Even if original is a bit washed-out, I do see a difference:

    Processing:
    Code:
    QTGMC(preset="slow", matchpreset="slow", matchpreset2="slow", sourcematch=3, tr1=2, tr2=1, NoiseTR=2, sharpness=0.1)
    TemporalDegrain2(degrainTR=3)

LSFmod(defaults="slow") ### no chroma sharpening, injected back pre-sharpened chroma

edit: even looking to your attempt the difference is there:

That is not a realistic comparison. It's impossible to tell the effect of sharpening on that; every edge has jaggies. Both should deinterlaced exactly the same, then one sharpened.

As per Alwin request, which is appropriate, here a comparison with the above processing without and with sharpening (both deinterlaced and denoised):

  14. Are my eyes deceiving me or has the sharpening made the sky slightly lighter in colour?

The fisherman looks pretty similar but the images in post #4 definitely have different colours: the one on the right is more saturated. Is that LSFMod doing that?

Still can't open your fisherman AVI. AVISynth says it can't find a decompressor. One of your earlier clips, Clip (1) opens OK.

I do not see nor measure any color deviation after LSFmod processing:

The video has quite good quality.
Below after Neat. Maybe too sharp, but you can adjust it to your needs.

The chroma is not being realigned before sharpen on these samples. Chroma must be addressed before deinterlace.

Well then, let's have a look at your version with script/process.

@RGR, what Deinterlacer/ing did you use for your video in post #21 ("Go Fishing 2 (deinterlaced + denoised + sharpened).avi").

    No time.

    ChromaShift() in Avisynth

And possibly CCD (Camcorder Color Denoise) in VirtualDub.
The cNR in Avisynth sucks, one of these times that VirtualDub has superior filters.

Those are both very basic straight-forward filters, not much need for help.

    Go.
