  1. Hi!
Have some VHS tapes digitalized into MPEG-2 files.
Nowdays with better technology itīs quite common to have 4K vids.
Tried few softwares and convertion tools but the result is long away from satisfactory.
Achieved better result with H.264/AVC (bigger file) than with H.265/HEVC which is a bit strange since HEVC is kind of standart nowdays.
Wonder if anybody can advise what is the best way to do so?
-Any good convertion soft that can make quite dissent improvement in quality?
-Any video software to create 4K file from MPEG-2 file?
Struggling many days with no good result.
Is it even possible to make any quality/sharpness improvement at all?
    Advise,please.

Im not sure about the 4k resolution and all of this but when using for example WonTube Free Video Converter it create real high quality videos, sort of the actual image quality is higher then compared to other video converters, and quite the big difference, i think the version ive tested might be a few years old, maybe there is an newer version with 4k res! The video files will however be quite big but the quality is pretty impressing! Ellse FFMpeg seem to master upscaling videos to 1080p pretty good maybe work fine with 4k allso!

You can try Wonderfox HD Video Converter Factory Pro to convert to 4K, but I doubt if you would get a better quality or sharpness. All you will get is a much bigger file size.

  4. Thanks for replies.
    Canīt even open them.
Loaded some other converters, will try those but little hope.
I think any video software should create a bit better result.
Donīt care about size, improvement is the most important to me.
    Will try some other options.

Ok, hope all goes well, keep trying im sure there is an solution around, simply just have to find it and figure out how to master it! I dont use 4k res myself so most of what ive got is up to 1080p, ill take an closer look for 4k res and see if i can find anything of use!

Edit: It might help with increasing the bitrate of the video, possibly some sort of filter that is beeing offered by some tools could make it appear as an "higher quality" video! Maybe Avidemux can make some sort of magic, ive seen it offer many filters and such things which seemed really nice, im still new to the program myself and only had time to test the conversion function so i cant really give much promises, im not sure if it has 4k res either tbh!

It is a waste of time to upscale SD video to 4K HEVC unless you need to join it with native 4K HEVC video for some reason. If you are just watching your captured MPEG-2 video on your 4K TV and the TV's built-in upscaling is decent, the picture from an SD MPEG-2 video won't look much different than the best possible result from upscaling the same video using current upscaling software.

Nothing that you do can truly improve the quality. The picture information for fine detail that you would normally see in a native 4K video is not present in the original analog VHS video or your digital video capture and cannot be accurately recreated. Realistically, all you can do is correct some kinds of picture defects with appropriate filters and blur blocky compression artifacts.

Most likely you will get added artifacts trying to upscale that much.

trying to take crappy 640x480 vhs transfers and magically making them into pristine 4k video is beyond nuts. good luck, but you're just wasting time.

Unless you have a hardware based system like the VS10 engine in Zidoo media players, software solutions rarely work without introducing artifacts. The Zidoo does a good job on good quality,to start with, on SD material converting on the fly to faux Dolby vision

Converting those interlaced MPEG-2 into 720p60 may be useful for uploading to Youtube (some would say, convert to 1080p or even 1440p).
