it's because you don't put m3u8 link (or video link too) into double quote "" so yt-dlp can't recognize full link

so, try with:

if you can play this video without VPN, no need test with or without VPN
isn't VPN your problem

i think abema (not tested) use some protection and m3u8 link only isn't enough for download
anyway easy way: if you can play, use Stream Recorder extension or also Tubedigger to rip your video

or open new issue to github yt-dlp section

Have you tried using "--cookies-from-browser firefox" (supposing you use Firefox) instead of "-u" and "-p"? Also try The Stream Detector browser extension to grab the playlist url in yt-dlp format (meaning it will add additional info and headers to your command).

I found a way to convert abematv-license:// to the genuine key.

Till now free anime series are OK. But I haven't figured out those premium ones, since those need account & password -> token in some form
