While I have no problem downloading your sample, I have 10G fiber internet, I'm not too familiar with pro-res, If you still want me to give a try send me the link.

I took a snippet of your large file using vdub2 to strip the prores2 and de-interlaced it, resized it to UHD and uploaded it all in lossless using the template below, See if you like the result, If so I'll see if I got some time this weekend and do the entire file since I have the template already.

    Code:
    AviSource("C:\Users\#####\Videos\Captures\ACT.avi")
    AssumeTFF()
    QTGMC(Preset="Faster")
    LanczosResize(3840, 2160)

That makes a lot of sense as the original HDV tapes digitised in lossless .avi format- 10gig for 1 hour. (With those files going into the edit suite to make the digibeta master from which the 422 codec version was made). Stripping out the 442 codec was genius!

The whole idea of shooting with a Sony Z1 in HDV in 2006 was to make the footage future-proof which I think we have achieved- remarkable.

HDV is not AVI, It's a lossy format that uses MPEG-2 for compression, Also it has 4:2:0 chroma subsampling and only 1440x1080 non square pixel interlaced scheme, All that has to happen to fit a HD footage into a DV cassette using the same bandwidth. Copying that to digibeta may have kept the chroma sub somehow good since it upsampled it to YUV 4:2:2 but lost on resolution.

Anyway, I did not strip 4:2:2, all the processing is done in lossless and in 4:2:2 and uploaded as such, YT then encode and convert to 4:2:0.

The resulting file size will certainly be an issue, I'm looking at some ways to get such a large file delivered to you, Otherwise we may have to compromise and encode the file into h.264 or h.265, From there you can upload it to your channel, Lets see if Jagabo or other member has an optimized 4K ffmpeg script just for YT uploading to minimize the quality loss during the YT upload process. We're looking at around 1TB for the entire video.

So what I was trying to describe was having shot on the Sony Z1 with a tape similar to this Image
[Attachment 75732 - Click to enlarge]
I was able to use the z1 to digitise to PC in raw, uncompressed format which was mpeg 2 I think- and about 10gig for 60mins- so a really high quality source. I think your sample had restored that original, uncompressed footage- from what I could tell. Those original rushes files were 1440 x 1080. I saw somewhere max YouTube upload is 120 gig which I have space to host and then download and upload to yt

I'm confused now, Did you convert to digital Betacam and transferred the Betacam footage or you transferred the HDV footage directly?

On the file size issue, I don't think I can upload such huge file to YT, it will take weeks based on the slow YT processing, This is something I've never done before, Lets see what the members suggest.

The first step of stripping the footage from Prores to Basic AVI losselessly compressed into HuffYUV resulted in a file of 37.5GB, De-interlacing will double that if done in 50p, But I'll see if I can do it in 25p to save on file size. And then resizing to just HD 1920x1080, Anything after 1080 is just line doubling.

Ok, I got some time to fiddle around this, The final file size came out to about 143GB, This is a losslessly compressed AVI, still @ 4:2:2, 1920x1080 @ 25p that you can upload directly to YT, Not sure if possible to do with a phone, So you would need a computer with at least 250GB of HDD space and internet connection. Where do you want me to send it to?

Hey dude, I was saying I’ll do the upload to yt- you’ll only need to upload to a folder on my Google drive.

The post production: I don’t know 100% how they did it as I just handed over the rushes tapes and they made the film from them, giving me the digibeta with the film on it.

Every time I’ve said “digibeta” what I meant was a Sony digital betacam 124 tape- exactly like this:

    Image
[Attachment 75735 - Click to enlarge]

That part I know for certain as I had two of these, blue and everything.
I had copies of them made as backups. A few years later because of various disasters each physical tape copy was lost and gone.
Luckily I’d sent to the community channel (now together tv) one of the copies to broadcast- years later they had lost that too but before they did they digitised it into a 26gig appleprores422 .mov file- kept the file in their archives and so kindly returned it to me.

Going back to the edit done in 2007 in The Sanctuary edit suite London (an expensive and state of the art place)- I wasn’t there or involved: I’d given them all 40 x 1 hour Sony HDV tapes and they did the edit without me.

I’m guessing they used a Z1 or deck to digitise each 1 hour hdv tape in lossless 50i HDV format - then they put that footage into an edit suite (FCP or Avid I guess) and after editing into a 97min film they exported the edit-the 97 minute finished film- in a compressed SD full height anamorphic wide screen (codec unknown) file and saved the file onto a blue digital betacam tape.

Amazing! Thank you so much! Setting up a folder on Google drives to PM you a link to upload now

Just fyi: there is enough space on the Google drive link I pm’d you if you can do a 50i version- the YouTube size upload limit is actually 256 gig.

I meant “stripping the apple ProRes422 codec out”.
Found this better description of the source rushes:

Sony HDV utilizes MPEG-2 video encoding. 1080i records at about 25Mbps recorded at 1080i/50. That is the settings we shot with.

Yes I'm aware and familiar with HDV and all Betacam variations, I have the players and dealt with a lot of tapes. My first encounter with HDV was back in 2004/2005 when I owned the Sony FX1 3CCD for shooting weddings, I took advantage and had a lot of family memories with its quality, I had all the tapes backed up before I finally sold it 4 years later, I will probably post some nature footage I took with it into my channel.

Your final file is uploading, I didn't try to do a 50p version because the file will certainly exceed 300GB, But the 25p version should look decent enough for online viewing.

Do you want to host a copy of A Convenient Truth movie on your YouTube/social media accounts? I’d like as many people as possible to download the film and upload it into their own YouTube channel. It’s just a case of getting a link from me to download the master copy of the film

I don't mind, I'll upload it when I get a chance. This will be the first anamorphic Digibeta I'll upload to my channel.
