    Hello,
I converted a .mkv video of 1.26Gb to .mp4 using HandBrake with the default profile "Fast 1080p30" as I wanted to keep the same aspect ratio.
I removed two language tracks and all the subtitles (I've impressed the forced one during conversion) as I don't need them, with the idea to make the file smaller.

The result is a video of 1.56Gb. I can't see what could have increased the size.

  2. First of all:
To convert your video from mkv to mp4, it was not necessary to re-encode it. A simple remux would have been sufficient and you could have left out the superfluous streams (audio, subtitles). This would have been very quick and, above all, would not have resulted in any loss of quality.

Regarding your question about the video size:
if you want a smaller size you have to reduce the bitrate.
In addition, you have changed from a better compression (hevc) to a worse one (x264/avc).

You could have simply remuxed the original MKV file in MKVToolNix and uticked the tracks you didn't need. Click on remux and 4 minutes later all done. No loss of quality, a tad smaller...
