I've read through so many threads on this subject but have specific questions that I need answered to fill some holes. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have 3 media types of old footage over the years to capture onto my computer, VHS, Hi8 & mDV
Mini DV question:
1) I got the mDV captured just fine with my camcorder through Firewire as dv type2 .avi files. I've noticed two issues a) the whites appear blown out and b) some jaggy lines from what I believe is interlaced content? Nothing can fix whites that are blown out, but for jaggy lines I have to de-interlace using software after the capture for viewing on computers and keeping a good quality backup? And keeping both files or dump the interlaced file after? Realistically I want to watch them on a computer, hdmi to tv, and edit files in a NLE later on.
Hi8 question:
2) Do the analog Hi-8mm recordings improve with a line-TBC and frame TBC? Playing back a Hi-8 tape in a dig-8 camcorder would use its internal line TBC before it outputs on both DV out and S-video out?
3) I've purchased a Sony TRV-240 off ebay to play back the Hi-8 tapes. I've concluded it is best to use s-video output to a capture card rather than DV encoding through Firewire yes?? I'm afraid the DV encoding will blow the whites out, maybe reduce color space and introduce more jaggy lines. But it seems like most people here are happy with the camcorder DV output so I should just do that?
4) For NLE do they work better with interlaced dv .avi files or better with mpg type files ? Would the mpg files be interlaced also coming from a dig8 camcorder via Firewire?
VHS question:
5) I'm struggling on the VHS workflow. I want to get my first attempt done before x-mas with just a line TBC then when I have more time either get a frame TBC added in or select the few tapes worthy enough to send them out professionally. If I use the pass-through functions of the Sony TRV240 with connecting a VHS player over s-video or composite into the camcorder, I therefore must use the DV for output? Meaning my analog VHS signal turns into a digital DV signal before going into the computer. You can't use a camcorder with line TBC and bring in an analog signal and output an analog signal.
6) But a DVD type player (Panasonic ES10 / Toshiba RS-XS) with a line TBC can do full analog to analog pass-through correct? Basically meaning I have to buy a DVD player with line TBC pass through or SVHS with line TBC if I want to keep it analog the whole way in, or just use a Dig8 camcorder and let that digitize before going into my computer?
