I was laughed at and mocked when I asked the question" Has no one come up with a DVD that can also play DIVX and AVI's etc".
The more I think about it the more I wonder why or if anyone will come up with something like that.
After all,a DVD/CD-Rom combo does both in the computer so theoretically is'nt it possible to install the same hardware in a DVD chassis and add a small processor and video card with TV out and hey-presto!??

I think it was Sigma designs that has designed a chip for standalone players but no word as to when or if it will be used in the near future. I read something about it a www.divx.com
But hey NEVER SAY NEVER.
We can only hope
Could you imagine downloading a dvdrip divx and burning it as dat, no more converting and playing it on a standalone player. I'd be the first in line to buy one

VCD4MEWe were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked? -
I'd be at the front of the line as well.
Geez..if I had the money to invest in a new Player that could play all these formats .I'd make a killing.(the ironic thing is,its probably not that difficult!!
Why has none of the major companies thought about it?.Corporate conspiracies??
Do they have a deal with DVD disk manufacturers and more importantly movie studios???
It just needs a manufacturer with the balls to come out with it and set the wheels in motion (just like JVC with VHS video tapes.....Sony thought they had a stranglehold with their Betacam machines...within 5 years it was all VHS and virtually no Beta).
All it takes is one brave company and the rest will follow like lemmings over a cliff.. -
I love it are you my twin
I always say the same thing about the betamax thing. Also when sony was really starting to make waves in the tv industry in the mid 80's everyone thought the had the greatest picture WRONG Zenith had the best picture quality for like 5-6 years in a row!
Now let's not forget the mini disc thing. Do you know about that one?
I hate SONY
I hate them so bad.My aunts husband is a sony big wig in the computer dep. and his discount is something like 40% off everything sony makes and I still won't but their products

Hey...thats a great idea.
Think of all these computers that can be recycled (P1 and maybe P2 etc with 300-400 mhz or less). If you have a cupboard or closet close to the TV just hide the puter away and your all set.
I tell you...the amount of times I've looked at a DIVX I've downloaded, did the convertion ,then looked at the end result on 2 CD's and thought to myself......"that was alot of effort for an ok end result".
I could save myself a lot of time, effort and blank cd's by doing this.
Hey ...d'ya want to start a partnership..."VCD-HAGGIS-ENTERPRISES INC".
Now..if only I could find that quarter I lost we'd be on our way.
Bill Gates...who the hell is he? -
People have already been doing this.Making computers into standalone divx machines.
like I said, once I get enough money I might try it.I have an old desktop computer that I'm going to try(not a tower)and then I'm just going to slip it into my audio/video rack in my home theater room.
What happened here
"Hey ...d'ya want to start a partnership..."VCD-HAGGIS-ENTERPRISES INC". "
WHERE'S MY NAMEin that sentence
So seriously where are you from?

Ha-Ha....
I only know you as VCD4ME so an abbreviated version is VCD...
I'm a Scot now living in Canada. -
it's very simple.
Licensing and demand.
1.) The company's have to pay a fee to use DIVX decoders in there systems. (they have to play for DVD decoders to.)
2.) They do not percieve a demand. Everyone can buy DVD disks and there is a demand to play them. They don't percieve a big enough demand from DVIX using home owners to produce a divx player.
Also I'm sure there r some legal issues.
