  1. I have bought a Sumvision Cyclone Micro media player on Amazon which is absolutely terrific for a really simple way of streaming pretty much any video format onto any TV with an HDMI input.... but

If I use it on a fairly new Samsung 55" 4K UHD TV the videos stream and play silky smooth through the HDMI port - like they should do!

But... if I use it on my SKY Glass 55" Smart TV (HDMI v2.1) the video stream is NOT silky smooth!!! It is noticeably choppy and stuttery!

How can this be? The media player is more than capable of streaming smooth videos and the USB memory stick attached to the media player is easily fast enough - and it is silky on the Samsung TV??

I thought HDMI inputs would be the same on most modern TV's?

How can this be that two modern TV's can be quite different using a media player with an HDMI output? Does one "buffer" the input and one doesn't?

My head is currently being scratched

    TIA Steve.

  2. Use it on the TV that shows it better, problem solved. pretty sure it's a settings issue. There's "auto" and "default" settings you need to adjust both in the player and display for it to show to your liking.

Hmm, not the greatest answer I had hoped for!
There are no settings on the media player nor the TV's regarding anything to do with HDMI.
I wonder if anyone else has any thoughts?

It's likely because the Samsung does frame interpolation while the other one does not.

    1. Post a sample.
    2. TVs also manipulate the image delivered via HDMI, so it will look better on some than on others. Turn off any image "enhancers" on your Samsung and compare.

Thanks for your answer - and yes after a little digging around I've realised that, yes, all TV's are not the same!!
The Samsung does have some nice settings for "Picture Clarity" which includes a setting for "Judder Reduction" and when switched off makes the input really stuttery and choppy!! When switched on it's like a different TV! It's amazing!
I'm going to look later this evening at the settings for the Sky Glass TV but I don't think it's as good as the Samsung which is probably why it stutters on the media players input.
I think the Sky Glass TV is, dare I say it.... not well blessed with those kind of features...

Uhm, just an silly tought here, could be the case that this media player thing you have some how communicated with this samsung tv and put the settings that the "communication" decided was the best settings into the memory of this media player! now when connecting to an other tv it use the samsung settings? can reset it somehow or clear the memory? if there are any! sometimes in theese external things, especially the cheap ones there is some odd ways to access the memory for the settings! such as theese funny looking mini usb ports! they can even come with an super small and super cheap mini screen to connect into this weird usb port! alternatively this port can be connected to the computer and accessed somehow with an firmware!

Edit: Maybe it even offer choices for profiles if this media player have any user inferface, maybe from here it is possible to select an new empty profile and activate this and if lucky this media payer will communicate with the other tv and put the settings for it into the memory! Sometimes, if you look in the instructions, it can allso be possible to reset an hardware by pressing some specific buttons, allso sometimes the user interface can be launched and displayed on the tv by pressing specific buttons (ie. hold this button for 10 seconds to launch the interface for the settings, and if there is no image for tv there are other buttons to reset it or handle settings with only power plugged in).

Sometimes this funny looking mini usb port can take power from any usb source, it might not be enough power to launch the media player if it has separate power, but it can be built to allow the settings to be customized with only this usb cable plugged in, for ease of use!

The memory can, worse case scenario be of the type it only have memory for 1 tv, so once it is saved there it is allso write protected, so must unlock it, or if lucky select an empty profile! Ellse the tv+media player would need to reverify the first initial communication for the settings each time you started the tv/media player or worse case is that it is locked to one specific setting, and the media player might instead have different profiles built in! if cant find any solutions from changing settings in the the tv try look for settings profiles the way mentioned up above!

Yep, just what I expected. This setting actually doesn't make the input stuttery and choppy, but rather (believe it or not) that's what the input really looks like in terms of motion. It is actually showing the input as is when this setting is switched off.

It's good to find out that there is a situation where turning on a TV's "Judder Reduction" is truly helpful. Most people who come here looking for information about that kind of feature want to know how to disable it so that 24 frame per second video looks like a film in a movie theater instead of live TV.
