Uncropping loses sync

Hi guys

As I can't find a better version than my Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic DVD in order to add my French subtitles, a friend gave me a mkv file.
This file is cropped (has no black stripes), and my subs don't fit (I made many effects).

I wanted to uncrop the file, but UncropMKV doesn't support the x265 file.

So I converted the x265 file into a h264 with Handbrake.
Then I uncropped it with uncropmkv.

And now it lost the synchronization. The audio is delayed.

I don't know how to uncrop a file with handbrake or vidcoder, I think it could be the solution.

But before I do that, is there a way to synchronize my audio and video files ?

You'll find 3 attached MediaInfo files:
1. The original mkv file (x265)
2. The converted file with handbrake
3. The uncropped file

If I understand correctly, you want to add a French subtitle to the mkv.
Should this subtitle be selectable or burned into the video?
Why do you need uncrop?
What subtitles do you have?
Are they bitmap subtitles (vobsub, brsup) or text subtitles (webvtt,mov_text,srt,ssa,ass)?

Thanks for your questions. I guess you want to know exactly what I want to do, in order to guide me better.

But don't worry, I know exactly what I am doing, and I just wanted to know how to synchronize audio and video.

I need black stripes to add selectable ass subs, because the movie contains marvelous images that would be spoilt by lines of texts.
And I will create embeded subs, too, to have 2 versions.

So, I found how to uncrop with VidCoder (see attached file), though the file is now gigantic (from 4 gigas to 20).
My PC is working now, I think I will let it work till the conversion is finished (a few hours). Living in France, I must now deconnect, I will answer your questions tomorrow.

you found the snag, I guess. That was the reason of the desynchronization.
Any solutions?

Luckily, VidCoder did a good job, reencoding with black stripes. I now have a h264 uncropped mp4 version (28 gigas).
And I could compress it into a mkv file (3 gigas) with XmediaRecode.

Use the clever FFmpeg GUI:

Then do the following:
1) Load the original mkv video (1920x808), click main, click various, click fix timestamps, write in FPS field 23.976 and click fix.
When this is done, play the new file (beginning, middle, end) to check if everything works correctly and is synchronized.

If yes, then
2) Load the new file (with the fixed timestamps), click main, click encode video stream, click resize, select the desired encoder (x264 or x265), select crf 23 for x264 or crf 25 for x265, select the framesize as in the photo and click encode.
When this is finished, click multiplex, the newly created video stream with the black stripes is green.
Drag & drop your French subtitles, select all streams on the left except the original video stream (the blue one), this must be deselected.
Then select the desired container (mp4, mkv) at the bottom and click multiplex.

This way you only recode your video once and minimize further loss of quality.

thank you for the very well detailled tutorial you made specially for me.

After having downloaded the 2 programs, I followed the 1rst part, but for each try I got 23.810 framerate for the new files. What went wrong?

Then it seems that the video was actually encoded at 23,810 fps (very strange).
Then omit point 1), load your old mkv and continue with point 2 (post #6).

All right, I did that, with a little part of my movie (5 mn), because the encoding of the entire film seems to be very long (hardly 1% done after 3 minutes...).
The video is perfect, but there is another problem : no audio!

Could you please try to give me more informations?

PS: my PC is definitely down, so I work sometimes on a old one. Don't worry if I can't reply immediately.

No need to encode with 10 bit. Change to 8 bit in the video encode screen.

As i wrote in post #6:
When the videostream encoding has finished, click multiplex, the newly created video stream with the black stripes is green.
Drag & drop your French subtitles, select all streams on the left except the original video stream (the blue one, it must be deselected).
Then select the desired container (mp4, mkv) at the bottom and click multiplex.

how do you do?

I have my PC fixed (it was the graphics card), now I can continue, great.
So, with a 5 mn extract of the movie, I followed your last instructions, thank you for having taken the time to explain.

Results: it took 2 minutes and 30 secondes to encode the video, and 1 second to multiplex the subs.
Reading it with VLC on my computer is perfect, but using one of my Tvboxes (EMTEC or NkinkBox), in order to watch the movie ibn the living-room TV, makes the pictures jerky, as if it still was a x265 format.

Maybe I must not use mkvmerge first? Is there a way to test just a part of the movie?

This is because you have encoded it with 10bit.
As i said in post #10 you should use 8 bit.
Recode it with 8 bit and remux it then.

still working on this file.
The result with 8 bit isn't better, alas.
See what it does, along with the jolt. I took a picture of my TV screen.

I believe it's the framerate that makes this.

If there is no solution, don't bother: I encoded my movie first with vidcoder (I got a 28 gigaoctets file), then muxed my subs with mkvtoolnix.

Then maybe the resolution (1920x1080) is to high for your Tvboxes (EMTEC or NkinkBox).
Read the manuals for both boxes.

I guess you're right for the Movie Cube TV Box by EMTEC supported formats: HDMI 1.4 CEC, 720P, 1080i, 1080p
But my NinkBox Android TV supports 4K resolution, so it must surely be something else.

And anyway, both my Tvboxes can read all the rest of my movies (1920x1080)

But don't worry, vidcoder helped me, too.
