  1. Hi. I'm encoding a 2 hr long avi file to mpeg 2 (DVD) with TMPGEnc. The rez is 720x480, 2-pass VBR (~4500) with noise reduction. The thing is... it's taking 104 hours to do it. I am running Windows XP, the video source comes from a WD 120GB slave drive. The encoded video goes to the master drive (40GB, not sure which brand). The system is Dell Dimension 8100, Pentium4 1.4GHz with 1GB RAM. I'm not running any other application at all while encoding. It seems like an awful lots of time to me. My question is is this normal? and is there a way to shorten the time? Thanks!

not normal...try start encode without any filters(noise reduction) and see what the estimated time is then?

Sometimes the estimated time drops, after the program has been running for a while. Still, that seems awfully long.

  4. No that time is about right - I have a 1.7Gig P4, and encoded a 44 minute DV PAL footage into DVD MPEG2 with noise reduction on and the time for that was estimated at 40+ hours. To be honest i couldn't see any difference between the encoded with noise filter and without.

    Cheers

  5. TMPGEnc just finished yesterday (the total elapsed time was about 105 hours!) Although it was an awful long encoding, the result video looks stunning! Noise reduction filter worked really well. My source comes from an old TV show on VHS tape. There's a lot of noise. Now, it actually looks like a DVD material! The picture is crystal clear with very smooth and natural color. A little of sharpness loss, but you can barely tell. It's awsome!!! I just wish it could have taken shorter.
