LordSmurf stated that Virtualdub2 is terrible at capturing because it inserts frames unnecessarily. Is the latest version of Virtualdub the best or 1.9.11? And is LordSmurf's 1.9.11 version better than the standard one at capturing?

    1.9.11 ?

Surely 1.10.4, proved by the original author, is fine ?

And that is what I use and has not given any issues.

But maybe Smirfy can expand on this.

I only use 1.9.11 for capturing as well, but for no other reason than not to change a running system.

VirtualDub2 induces dropped frames for most cards, especially at recording start. But it's not the only issue, just the main obvious issue.

Some cards, on some systems, allow 2 without (too many) issues, but it's a narrow success rate.

I think the main reason is that the fork is messy, spaghetti code. Issues started at 1.10.x official, carried over to FM (pre-2 fork), and 2 seems to have gotten both better and worse.

It's also not just capturing. Lots of the basic filters in 2 cause weird artifacts. For example, resize and crop can result in weird green borders, some sort of glitch/error in processing.

2 was fine for some thing, especially converting to/from formats. But the capture and filtering is a mess now.

I believe the 2 dev, Shekh, vanished some years ago. I also believe the "official" 2 site is run by somebody else, not him.

I want to see a stripped 3 purely for capture. I actually tried to get with devs multiple times now in recent years, to make that happen. But too many devs want to reinvent the wheel, or worry too much about curves on the GUI. Not to strip down so-called "old and ugly" software in a fork. Or they want to do too much, make a crappy swiss knife software.
