Use MediaInfo, drag and drop your AVI file into it. Take a screen shot and post here. Expert here should be able to help you.

Use HandBrake to convert from AVI to mp4 instead.

I use this to convert mainly MKV to MP4 for my EMBY media player run via a Mini-PC, but I also use it to convert AVI to MP4 just as easily

Also its free and is updated fairly regular and optionally fully portableso can be run from anywhere you want without having to install it

You could check what codec this video file is using and install the codec, which would normally get an video to work with the standard media player. Normally an AVI video use Xvid or DivX codec. Installing the video codec would make the fix persistent and work all the time and spare you the trouble of converting the videos. Hopefully, if you are downloading the movies theyre using same codecs and you wont need to work much more with the issue after installing the codec.

Edit: VLC Media Player can convert to some formats/codecs that is compitable with an standard media player without any additional codecs. (From within VLC Media Player you can allso click on Tools>Codec Information to help find what codec the video is using). The VLC Media Player is completely free to use.

If you dont want to use VLC Media Player and not install codecs either, it would be easier to help find an video converter to help if you could figure out what codecs are supported by your media player. Sometimes it is allso possible to install an video codec onto an computer and the video converter program can find this codec and the option to convert into this format and codec come avalible once you install this partiular codec onto the computer. Some converters does not support this!

Same thing goes for the standard media player, which will find the codec on the computer to be able to play the video.

You can also simply mux your avi into an mp4 container without recoding (if the container accepts the codecs).

You can easily test this with clever Ffmpeg-GUI.
Load your avi, click main. click multiplex, select mp4 as container and click multiplex.

If you don't get an error message, it worked.
