I don't have a paid subscription, I don't even have an account. Manipulating the mpd gives me 1080p. By the way I'm able to get mpd for paid content but I can't get the key, the license request return :

This trick doesn't work sadly for mpds of this format:

Either you got lucky or it only works for ism that have 1 digit groups. In the previous case it finds a mpd with audio only.

Edit: Apparently if you replace 4000 with 8000 you can get 1080p. Kudos to @Lostion for explaining the trick. He also claims that if you add 10000 instead for all mpd URLs such as the one I posted you can get 1080p. It's worth checking.

That MPD provides two 1080p resolutions which differ in bit rate. Yeah!

But stop:

fails to download the variant with the higher bit rate, because there is something wrong with the last segment. This is reproducible: I have tried a dozen of times and each time it downloaded all of the segments except the last one.

It's the same when using

N_m3u8DL-RE

. That is,

also downloads all segments but the last if I select the 1080p resolution variant with the highest bit rate. Therefore I believe that the error is on RTL's side. Can somebody confirm that?

Side note:

I am aware the the stream is encrypted. However, currently I don't care about that. I just would like to know why downloading that last segment is not possible.

Maybe somebody found a method to get the higher CBR version?

Thank you very much, Obo. That's a little bit embarrassing because that command line option has been mentioned a few posts above, so I really should have tried it myself. But I thought that missing segments would render the file useless and that I shouldn't ignore them for that reason. Thanks again for explaining that this is normal.

[ As a side note, I regularly downloaded the Schlefaz episodes from Tele5 as long as they were located there, and I never encountered missing segments there. This made me worry even more. ]

I would also be highly interested into a method that enables us to find the best quality version.

Apart from that, I have two further questions:

1. Would it be appropriate to come back here whenever a new Schlefaz episode is online in order to ask for the MPD that provides the best quality?

2. Is it possible to determine before downloading whether the streams in a MPD are VBR or CBR? I have just had a look into the output of yt-dlp -F as well as of N_m3u8DL-RE, but that output doesn't seem to provide this information. Of course, once a stream is downloaded, the type (VBR vs. CBR) can easily determined by several free tools, but is this easily possible also before download?

Thank you very much again! That explanation has helped me a lot. In all cases I have tried, I was able to get the rtlplus.mpd. The remaining question then is if there are other rtlplus.mpd files that provide even better quality.

For example, for the first Schlefaz episode of the current season, I have found an MPD that provides 1080p with a bit rate of 6640 Kbps. Now I am asking myself if there is an even better one; after all, the best version for the second episode was at 7800 Kbps.

Subtitles are not that interesting for me. I believe that the Schlefaz episodes don't contain subtitles anyway.

Now I've got another problem. I am trying to download this video:

I am completely new in this field and was glad that I found a ready-made solution which Angela's (at least, I believe) hellyes3 and hellyes3gui. I have partial success:

When loading the video, I can easily find the MPD file and the license request. If I paste them into the respective fields of hellyes3gui, it gives me the correct keys, and I can download and decrypt the video. So far, so good.

But the MPD file offers only versions with bad quality and low resolutions. Fortunately, a helpful soul told me the location of another MPD file for this video that contains 1080p in good quality.

Now, when I paste the URL of that MPD file into hellyes3gui (leaving the license request as-is) and hit the "Get Keys" button, I get a HTTP 403 status. What could be the reason for this?

A few things to note:

- I could download the first two episodes of the current Schlefaz season using the same method (i.e., paste the license request from the developer tools into hellyes3gui, paste the manipulated MPD URL for the best resolution into hellyes3gui, and hit "Get Keys"). It's just the third episodes where this method fails. Did RTL change something during the last days?

- I thought that perhaps the wvd device may have been blocked, so I downloaded a ZIP-File with ready-made wvd devices from another thread here, picked on of them and changed one line in the code of hellyes3gui to make it use that other wvd file. This did not change anything, I am still getting a 403 when hitting "Get Keys".

- I have tried hellyes3 instead of hellyes3gui with the same result.

- If I then use the MPD link from the developer tools again, everything works like a charm. This is reliably reproducible. With the license request and the MPD from the developer tools, everything works. With the license request from the developer tools and the other (better) MPD, I get a 403, and don't get any keys.

Any ideas?

The person who helped me told me that RTL has not changed anything. This makes the situation a mystery for me. There must be a reason why the good MPD together with the original license request leads to a 403, but the original (bad) MPD with the original license request works.
