I recently put together a new computer and want to try my hand at ripping a DVD. I need to buy a DVD-ROM and would like to know which is the best and fastest for ripping DVD's. If it's a 16x does it rip at 16x? Thanks!!!

I am quite happy with my Creative 12x. The drive is surely [i]manufactured[/] by a different company, not sure who it is.
SmartRipper never exceeds 6x or so, even with my drive. Seems like that is the norm, though. -
I have Lite-On DVD Rom drive. I get about 6-8x ripping speeds. Just make sure you don't connect your DVD ROM drive to the same IDE port as your hard drive.

I have a Lite-On 16x and I've done about 4 DVD's so far. The reason I got the LITE-ON is cause the good review sites I read from all HIGHLY recommend this drive. I'm very happy with it. On average my rip speeds start at 4x - 6x, but after 1/3 of the way, it screams. Sustained 8x -10X. And towards the end, the highest I got was 12X !!! And its super cheap.

my 16x pioneer drive was never able to rip above 2x. both my pioneer & liteon 16x drives refused to completely play or rip certain (unscratched)discs & not the same ones between them. i have abandoned the notion of fastest rip speed & am looking for a drive that just ******* plays the discs. right now i am evaluating a 12x btc that has so far played all the discs the pioneer & liteon failed to

to all the people with the Pioneer 16x DVD, if you tried everything to make your dvd rip at 6x and havent been successfully, I suggest you reinstall windows xp (if that your OS)... it worked for me, ripping at 6-10x compared to 1-2x before...
I tried all the method to make it work, changing ide cable, installing the new aspi, reinstalling smartripper etc etc. all failed...
reinstalled winxp, installed the new aspi driver and everything was good..
