Videos turned B&W with strange colour overlayed?!

Hi, I am getting this strange colour effect over desaturated image when trying to capture old family vhs tapes (recorded in france so I assume in SECAM). It doesn't happen with commercial movie tapes. Sound is all fine. When I RW/FF and press play, the image is better for a second or two (but still B&W when it should be in colour). I have attached examples.

My setup currently is VCR (PAL/SECAM) > Panasonic ES15 > SCART-HDMI converter (amazon) > HDMI-USB video capture (cheap amazon) > OBS

VCR and ES15 are connected by SCART. After looking through various forums, I understand it could perhaps be from the cheap capture card? The image shows up fine and in correct colour when connected directly from VCR to TV by scart. However the capture card says 'no signal' when going straight from VCR without ES15 as pass through.

All help appreciated, quite confused as to what is causing this! Would connecting it all by S-video or Composite change anything? Do I need a different video capture device?

That card does look pretty cheap to me. I suggest you to replace it with something better that's been tested. If you're willing to go the USB route, there are either GV-USB2 or Hauppauge USB-Live2, both have been tested by numerous forum members and are proven to be good.

No, don't use OBS to capture video. You want a raw, 4:2:2 chroma subsampling AVI output. Familiarize yourself either with Virtualdub or AmaRecTV. Try both and see what works best for you.

Don't use composite, it introduces many unwanted side-effects such as crawling dot pattern due to chroma-luma crosstalk. Capture S-Video.

Check that the SCART output on the ES10 isn't set to S-Video.

I would also test that the output from the ES10 looks fine on the TV to check if it's the adapter that's the issue or if there is some problem with the ES10.

Thanks for the replies! I ended up going with the USB-Live2 and am now using Virtualdub, using S-video

Going straight from the VCR to capture, it works perfectly fine, however I'm encountering problems going through the ES15

There are pink/blue horizontal lines on the left side of the video, and a pink tint that goes away during ff/rw and playing it from pause (in an inconsistent way). By stopping and restarting play it plays normally (with distortion on the side) but often goes back to the pink tint randomly or flickers pink occasionally. Is this the 'SECAM fire' ? Why is it intermittent and not consistent? Any way to get rid of it?
