help needed how do you play a laserdisc and put it onto a dvd disc
my late grandfather who passed away about a few weeks ago had a few laserdisc films some rare ones but no laserdisc player anyway my grandmother gave me the laserdisc films.but i need a laserdisc player so i bought a working laserdisc player onlin and what i thought of if it can be done. is there anyway i can play the laserdisc films and record them onto a dvd disc i do have a dvd recorder with 1 hdmi port and 1 scart port and a 1 s-video port and 1 red white and yellow rca ports at the back of this dvd recorder. and my laserdisc player has only 1 s-video port and 1 rca ports red white and yellow ports at the back of the laserdisc player. so does anyone know if i can play a laserdisc film and record it to a dvd disc with a dvd recorder if it can be done what cables would i need.

S-Video to S-Video OR composite yellow to yellow, and audio to audio (red-red, white -white), The quality will be mediocre though, Laserdiscs are better captured to digital files using a capture device but based on your question about hooking up wires it seems that your knowledge is very limited so just proceed with the DVD conversion.

  3. looks like you know little in video so yes a dvd recorder will be simple enough, make sure to choose SP speed at least

A laserdisc player with s-video output ? never heard of that… could also be a sound decoder connection….. (please mention brand and model name)
be sure that both media (discs) and player are from the same tv-system both PAL or both NTSC (since you bought the player online?)
or the player should be a dual system one, if you have both PAL and NTSC discs, you can run into that some have no sound, due to LaserVision and LaserDisc difference, where LaserVision has analog sound, and LaserDisc having also Digital sound, video of both are analog.
You did not mention brand and model name of the player, or the DVD recorder, you are sure all discs are of the LaserDisc format ? not LaserVision ?
The DVD recorder seems to be a PAL tv system one ? because you mention SCART.. the LaserDisc player is also PAL ? or NTSC, (no SCART?)
SP recording mode means that you can put one hour on a single layer DVD disc, if the recorder can also record on double layer dvd-discs you can record almost 2 hour onto such a disc, if you have a Panasonic dvd recorder, this could be the case…
A HDMI connection would be an output on a recorder. connect yellow from the back of the LaserDisc player to put into the front yellow of the dvd recorder, same is valid for the red/white connections, when both Laserdisc and DVD recorder have SCART, a fully wired SCART cable can also be used in between, don,t know if any copy protection are active though…...

There are some high end LD players with S-Video out but they use an old technology of separating Y and C from the native composite of LD processor, It is better captured via composite out and let the DVD recorder or capture card handle the comb filtering.

I have my doubts about the Laserdisc player…. @barry25 did you already played some discs ? after some research i understand you live in the UK, and you're saying the LD player has no SCART
which could mean it's a player from the USA ?, or is it a multisystem one ? playing well over the RF modulator to the tuner of a tv does not yet mean you have a correct signal at the direct video output, so please tell from which country the LD player comes from, or what the logo's on the front of the player are saying, otherwise it's a waste of time.

  7. it is a NTSC laserdisc player and a panasonic brand and the laserdisc films are NTSC FILMS so i bought a working laserdisc player that plays NTSC films. and the multisystem laserdisc players that play pal and ntsc are a lot of money thoses ones are not cheap. plus they did not make many multisystem laserdisc players i would have got a multisystem laserdisc player that plays pal and ntsc but the price is a lot of money.so i bought a ntsc laserdisc player i only payed £37.00 in total and it is pretty much brand new no marks on it it was just a bit dusty on the top of the lid. so with a dry cloth i just wiped the top of the laserdisc player it works perfect it is just playing the laserdisc films and putting them onto a dvd disc.

Also.... you have the remote for the DVD-recorder to set the recorder in the menu to NTSC mode ? then you should already have made some LD copies to DVD i guess..? if so, you can use also the dvd-recorder as passthrough to connect the future capture device to the video out of the dvd-recorder,( if the "raw" Laserdisc video signal is not stable enough..)

If it is going to be used for LD only and not tape formats, you can get a composite only capture device with a good comb filter, Ensemble Designs, Snell & Willcox, Aja, Grass Valley made devices with good comb filtering up until early 2000's, Ensemble Designs still make them on special orders, Albeit all old comb filtering technologies.

A new comer called Singmai made a modern composite capture device designed for both VHS and LD with the latest comb filtering technology, You can reach out to them and ask, They had a composite only device for LD but I think they discontinued it.

All those devices don't have USB3 (some have USB 1.1 for firmware updates and device control only), So you will need a SDI/PCIe interface card or a SDI/USB3 adapter, Also a SDI/Thunderbolt for MAC and works without issues. Although SDI is a digital port but it is not found in computers and laptops without adaptation.

The best way to capture Laserdisc is Domesday duplicator / LDdecode.

Second choice in quality, a high end capture card with good Comb filter, as dellsam34 suggested.

For budget workflow, a IOData GV-USB2 is adequate.

A laserdisc player with s-video output ? never heard of that
    You must be joking

due to LaserVision and LaserDisc difference, where LaserVision has analog sound, and LaserDisc having also Digital sound
    What are you talking about?

That's for VHS, not appropriate for laserdisc output signal

He's conflating Laserdisc, the format with LaserVision, the brand. So complete nonsense.
