  2. errr..for smartripper...time depends on dvd-rom rip speed of course...(faster is better )

as for dvd2avi and tmpgenc, it depends on your settings...but all things constant, CPU MEANS EVERYTHING (you gonna hear alot about RAM or HDD speed...but all those mean nothing if you have adequate amount...256 MB RAM compared to 512 MB RAM isn't gonna make much of a difference if you normally let your comp encode at night w/o doing anything else on your comp...as for hdd speed...i can't tell much different between 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM...i have both) however, increasing your CPU power will always decrease encoding time by a proportional amount (or nearly)..this means doubling your CPU power will nearly cut your encode time in half (i've personally experienced this)

as for settings, normalizing and downsampling in dvd2avi will increase time...also, the kbit/s of the audio track you're extracting will also affect time...448 kbit/s audio will obviously take longer time than 192 kbit/audio...

as for tmgpenc, motion search accuracy will affect time..i've been told that highest quality (slowest) increases encode time by about 8 hrs over high quality (slow) w/o much different in quality....2 pass VBR essentially doubles the encode time over CQ VBR, filters will also increase encode time (using the adaptive de-interlace filter will increase by alot depending on CPU...i'm experience anywhere from extra 4 hrs to extra 8 hrs...adaptive de-interlace takes longer cuz the CPU needs to analyze each frame to see if it needs to be de-interlaced)
