  1. Xmedia Recode has never been 100% good with MKV videos. The framerate seems choppy when converting to MP4. I don't have issues when converting from other formats. I set the framerate to "keep original" and I did try a specific framerate from the MKV. I tried an older version from last year, no difference.

    This scenario often causes problems

  5. so what does it mean? what is the solution? i didn't get this kind of error with other video converters. i wish i could use them but i have to find the right version

I don't know if Xmedia Recode can handle it or not. If you don't really need anything specific to XMR, use one if the other apps

  7. Any Video Converter used to be good for ASS subtitle styles. But their new update makes it impossible to add subtitles and at the same time change the resolution, bitrate etc. It's terrible. So I've been trying to find older versions. AVC and Xmedia are the only programs in the world that can handle ASS styles

Can Handbrake / Vidcoder not deal with them?

Why are you converting it to mp4? The bitrate/file size is already low

  9. Because I like watching videos on my PS3, it's one of the only things that can store videos on it. It doesn't support MKV or 265. I think I've tried handbrake, but they probably don't handle ASS subtitles properly. I guess I could try Vidcoder

Do you have a particular reason for using ASS subs?

  11. I'm deaf so I prefer black backgrounds so its easier to read. I've done this for many years now. There are a lot of instances where if there's no black background, its hard to read the subtitles.

Have you tried Box4 to remux your MKV instead?
It's quicker, and keeps original quality

  13. ok so this is just to normalize the framerate?

No. It's doesn't re-encode, it just puts the existing video and audio into an mp4

  15. hmm i couldn't figure out how to change the output to MP4.

  17. well it was worth a shot. it all seemed to be going well, when i added the muxed mp4 to xmedia, and added the subtitle. the converted video doesn't show subtitles at all.

    I see what you mean - the mp4 container doesn't support ASS subtitles as a separate strream;
XMR must have burned them into the video itself/.
See this thread (post by jagabo) about using a simple BAT file that calls FFmpeg and burns in the sub
    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/401366-Can-ass-subtitles-be-pasted-to-a-mp4-video
(and hope it can handle the variable frame rate)

But if you're going to do that, might as well drag in the original MKV file; no point creating the mp4 intermediate

  19. I appreciate all the help, but It doesn't seem to have an option for resizing or changing bitrate

You should have mentioned these other considerations right at the beginning

FWIW, I found this movie online and downloaded the first 6 minutes.
Encodes good in Vidcoder, set it to constant framerate, 23.976

    You could try clever FFmpeg-GUI.
Load your movie, click main, click various, click fix timestamps, insert 23.976, click fix timestamps.
The file is read by the given fps and streamcopied only, no reencode occours.

  22. I found a ffmpeg command to change the resolution, but the bitrate commands are a bit more complex. From what I've found, if I want to set the bitrate to 1200, it has to include a 2 pass command and/or the bat file has to be run twice. I don't quite understand it.

  23. I can't use clever ffmpeg, because I pointed it to the ffmpeg.exe, and yet it gave me a bunch of errors and told me to reinstall. But that doesn't make sense, it's a portable program.

You should point it to the bin folder, like in the picture.

  25. what bin folder? I only see the mkv filenames.

Instead of pointing to ffmpeg.exe, point to the bin folder, that contains ffmpeg.exe, ffplay.exe and ffprobe.exe.

  27. Can you be more specific please? I assume you mean the ffmpeg that's in some other folder that's not included within my Any Video Converter folder.

  28. Have you read the readme.txt?
    Download
    https://www.videohelp.com/download/ffmpeg-6.0-full_build.7z
and extract it to any location you want, then point clever Ffmpeg-GUI to the bin folder.

  29. Okay I was confused because my video converter has its own ffmpeg files in the converter folder. The ffmpeg readme doesn't have specific instructions, it seems to be a function list. I've made a custom folder to store everything in and now it works. However I was wondering if you meant that the ffmpeg file is stored in the Windows folder somewhere? It would explain my problems with various converters, perhaps they are using that version rather than the program folder's ffmpeg.
