A mate sent me some old captures he did back in 2009 using a canopus advc 300. The only thing that stands out is the apparent digital compression that creates bad artifacts on certain spots. Not sure if it was caused due to low bitrate.

Well DV has a constant bitrate so that should not be a factor.
Mind you the quoted bitrate is a little odd since I also have a ADVC300 and I get 24.4 mb/s (28.8 mb/s encoded) with a direct transfer using WinDV or ScLive whereas your sample is 27.6 mb/s. Also DV should have an DAR flag of 4:3 (or 16:9) whereas yours defaults to 5:4. So I guess both of these play in to the problems. -
Compression artifacts look pretty minor to me. If I were to do anything, I'd concentrate more on the VHS ringing, like what you see to the right of Freddy Mercury's head. You also need to tweak the levels, because the blacks look washed out. It otherwise looks like a pretty decent transfer.
