I'm assuming all IVTC tools produce the same quality result since it's not interpreting data like deinterlacing is doing is this correct? I usually deinterlace with QTGMC or similar in avisynth but I detelecine in handbrake because it's a bit faster for me to use the gui. Should I change this practice?

They're definitely not the same quality. TFM has far more options for it to seek out and reconstruct full frames from fields in bizarre patterns and combinations. Telecined material very often does not follow an intelligent cccpp pattern and is all over the place. The fallback deinterlacing options for TFM also have a lot more flexibility and higher quality. I mean MAYBE there are cases where you get near-equivalent results, but I don't trust it. Handbrake is for when you quickly want to convert some vids for the kids to watch in the van.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense. I've only ever detelecined cccpp content. Didn't realize TFM would recognize the non standard patterns. That said, if it is following the standard cccpp pattern. Each program is just assembling the fields back together right? It's not interpreting a field as if it's being deinterlaced? I'm several TV Shows deep in my DVD encodes and don't want to redo my previous encodes unless there is a quality difference. I'll be using TFM from now on.
Edit: I just ran a test there TFM is definitely higher quality.Last edited by LaserBones; 22nd Aug 2023 at 18:48.

If you're looking for the highest quality result, especially when dealing with telecine content, using a dedicated IVTC tool like QTGMC in Avisynth might provide better results than using Handbrake's detelecine feature. Handbrake might sacrifice some accuracy and customization options in favor of ease of use and speed.

Nope, QTGMC is a deinterlacer, not a tool for IVTC.
