Shots captured to MPEG-2, postprocessed by QTGMC with TR=3, compressed to H264 with crf=17 - take that into consideration (as well as bad aspect ratio)
(Edit - the best, sharp but noisy; Auto - good; Sharp - not so sharp; Soft - useless)

I agree with your assessment. Interesting that the 3rd and 4th have chroma shifted to the right.

You didn't have to go through MPEG-2 and h.264, You could have used lossless AVI. But yes "Edit" supposed to minimize picture processing so you get close to the raw picture on the tape, It should look slightly better.

I do not know if we can say "better" in absolute. In general, with the edit mode you get a noiser picture with maybe more details. With non edit mode you have a noise reduced and smoothed image.
If you plan an AviSynth restoration, the edit mode case gives you more freedom (as Skiller stated in the other thread), but the non edit case can help to reduce the strength of the AviSynth denoiser (for instance a lower temporal radius) avoiding erasing fine details.
As always, the best way is to experiement both ways with own material, and choose the best. -
In my case "edit" was always sharper, and other modes give me softer results, Personally the only thing I need from the VCR to do for me is line TBC and DNR and I can achieve those while in "edit" mode. But others may want something else or VCR's behave differently.

I didn't see anything like that on the JVC HR-6850 in Auto mode. But model HR-7600 (ok, that's a Philips VR 1100) in Auto mode introduced "wandering textures"
