The underlying source for this seems to have been 25 fps. As such, it may not play as smooth, you'll have to try it and see
This may well be a different additional problem-again, probably thanks to that crook-but there were about four times when it suddenly pixelated and then played normally, though one event had badly pixelated Diane Varsi's face. Is this all due to the Maxell disc surface (blank disc quality?) and/or what other possible causes? With one of those events, I replayed the same footage four times and each time the momentary freezing/pixelation occurred.

I think you're right, there are some problems in your video.
I think you have a couple of choices, look for an original, studio release, DVD -
or encode one yourself from a download. This movie is in the public domain, plenty of copies about.

    I found another one @ 720p, it's full widescreen this time, 2.35:1
I encoded this small section in AVStoDVD to create DVD spec mpeg-2.

    That's impressive.
Yeah, I found a couple of 720p sources; I was trying to find out if he the OP could make a better DVD at home than
that poor effort he got from eBay

There is still something that bothers me about that Fleabay disk. Now I might well have had a senior moment but like I previously said, and will now repeat it here, "The maths does not add up".

Now that sample could have thrown me but just to put my own mind at ease, not that it makes much difference to the overall issue, as I originally requested can you forward mediainfo (text mode) reports of those three vob files. In my experience a mkv file can report somewhat differently to what the original vob was even tho no actual re-encoding should have taken place.
