I have a video file, recorded with my Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus and apparently I wasn't aware that the highest video recording mode was pre-selected when I randomly started videoing. So the file was a 4k 60 fps HDR video file recorded in HEVC.

Never heard of that one, but a quick google research told me it apparently is the new MP5 format.

Problem with this is, I can't send these videos with messaging apps on my phone such as WhatsApp (which we commonly use over here in Germany) because either MP5 or HEVC doesn't seem to be supported.

It took me quite a while to figure out the problem was with the HEVC settings. Once I disabled them I got normal mp4 files that were sendable in messaging apps.

The problem now is - I need to convert those HEVC files into regular MP4 files but neither my NLE (currently MAGIX) nor VDub2 seem to be able to handle them. I even bought a HEVC encoder for MAGIX for 5 bucks which now lets me import the file into Magix, but the preview window is all greenish and the video looks very distorted. Same when I export / re-encode it with MAGIX. I'll get a greenish, distorted video while the audio is just fine.

So I thought I'd try it with VDub2 instead. And yes, I can import the HEVC file just fine and I won't get any greenish distortions there, BUT the video still isn't depicted properly. It seems as if the video loses a lot of saturation once imported into VDub2. It looks rather pale and with a greyish touch and very much zoomed in. Not even close to how it looks when I directly play it with VLC Player.

So... my question. What to do? There must be a way to process and edit HEVC 4K files recorded with a Samsung Galaxy S23 phone??

    MediaInfo says:

    Format: HEVC
    Format-Profile: Main 10@L5.1@High
HDR format: SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version 1
    Codec-ID: hvc1
    Real Frame Rate: 60.000 FPS
    Color Space: YUV
    Chroma: 4:2:0
    Bit depth: 10 bits

Here's a picture of how it should normally look like in VLC Player:

Here's how it looks in VDub2:

In my NLE (Magix) it looks just greenish / distorted even after I bought the HEVC activation codec.

Any ideas how I can process and work on those HEVC files? They seem very inaccessible at the moment, no matter what tool I try. Is it the HEVC codec? Is it HDR? Is it the Samsung phone?

  2. It is the HDR of the file. It needs tonemapping, if missing it will look washed out.

    S3 or RS3?

@ ProWo: thanks, I'll try this out. And there's no way to do it in VDub? I was looking for "Direct Stream Copy". I only wanted to export a small section of the video but wanted everything else to stay the same.
