HELP! Newbie- super slow downloads on movies, even w/ DSL

I am trying to download various movies (Spiderman!!) and am experiencing very slow downloads. I have a ADSL line so I know it is not me. I can experience sustained 150kbps on some sites (Download.com) but kazaa and eDonkey regularly don't go over 5-8kbps, sometimes up to 17kbps. It it just who i am downloading from? Is it my settings? Are there any P2P or Gnutella softwares that will give good download speeds? I don't want to use IRC. Anyone one else experience these slow downloads? There has to be a way!!

It it just who i am downloading from? YES!! Think about it, you can only go as fast as someone can send to you. Some dsl has a upload cap of 16k/sec, now if they have even 2 people downloading from them, that 16 is cut in half. The best way to get things with decent speeds is either through news groups, knowing people with ftps, or using mirc. I use mirc, and i cap out around 200k/sec when i download things. A movie takes a couple of hours to complete.

try irc . I know its hard but I'm trying to learn it myself for faster downloads.

Also this may sound strange but did you go to speedtest.com this will tell you how good your speed is. or pcpitstop.com it checks out your whole computer and then will give you instructions to optimize your computers speed
I had the same problem and went from 15kb/sec to 30ks/sec
I haven't tried edonkey yet but I heard there is away to tweak the bandwith to get faster downloads, also I heard that edonkey is a kind of cross between p2p and irc.

A couple others to try are winmx and Imesh.Winmx gets the movies faster than anytother p2p.
Imesh is a site you can download from multiple users for the same file it splits it up for example you could be downloading at a speed in excess of 50 kbs from say around 6-7 people.

My connection will upload at 200kbps, and download at 1000. I guesss i'll try mIRC. I am a TOTAL BEGINNER. All i know is that it is a chat program that allows file transfer. I there a Beginner guide? It's not worth it to me if it takes hours opon hours to learn. Any idea on the learning curve time? What about viruses, aren't there alot? Just want to download movies!

I know this is ironic but there is a site called www.irchelp.org

Also there are beginer chat rooms, for people first learning
