I have ripped a DVD with VLC, Handbrake, WinX DVD Ripper and VideoProc and each stops short of the end by several minutes. Is there a remedy ?

    StreamFab has several DVD software.
    DVD Ripper
    Blu-Ray Ripper
They are not cheap but at least you can try them (Free trial available not sure about limitations) and see if they give you a better ripping.

The four I mentioned managed to rip more than 95%; Streamfab crashed in the attempt.

Is the DVD finalized? Can you use another DVD player?

    MakeMKV.
If you want one single file of the movie use Save Selected Titles.
If rip want to rip the whole disk to ISO use Backup.

DVDShrink copied the DVD to files, without truncating the end - however the files are a number of VOBs, which I would want joined into a single video file.

Use AVIDemux to join up your VOBs into one MPEG 2 file.

I have written a guide here:

    http://aaproductions.net/avidemux.htm

Note, it doesn't need to be "installed", download the "Portable" version, unzip and run the exe file. Follow the initial bit, then down to the Combine Multiple VOBs into a single MPG.

    Thank you.

It so happens that my usual movie joiner MOVIEMAKER could do the job of joining just the video VOBs with the result of an mp4 file that has sound-track.
