  1. Hi, I'm literally going to pull my hair out..
I have just purchased a 2nd hand camcorder to upload the mini dv tapes I have to my pc, as my old Panasonic died..
I put the cd in my pc but nothing would pop up to actually run & install..
I have win10 & the windows needed is 98- XP, (did not know this beforehand) is there anything I can do as I don't want to buy a new camera that costs more than I can afford..
    Camera is PANASONIC NV-GS75..
    Thanks 😊

You can add a virtual machine on your Win10 PC and install XP O/S.
    Use Oracle VirtualBox for example.
You will need to find XP installation software if you don't have it somewhere at home. Try to buy on eBay

No need to pull your hair out, yet. And there may be no need to install those archaic old OSs either. The issue will be the Firewire drivers of Win 10.

You will not need any specific drivers for your GS75. It is a bog-standard DV camcorder that will work provided the correct Firewire driver is installed.

I'm away from my main machine so can't provide screenshots, but with your GS75 plugged in, check in Device Manager; do you see any reference to IEEE1394 and/or the GS75 or similar entry for a camcorder under imaging devices?

FWIW, IMO there is no need to go back to XP. Windows 7 had a great Firewire driver so that's what you should be aiming for if desperation sets in. But we're not at that stage yet.

You'll be interested to know I recently updated to Win 11 and the Firewire works, "out of the box", with a cheap VIA chipset-based Firewire card.

The plot thickens. I see the 75 does have capability to transfer via USB, but it looks like you do need XP to do it.

Does your computer have a Firewire port?

Compatibility mode might be the answer for MotionDV:

I can confirm that that video is correct for Win 11.

    Comments for Win 11:

I got this to work on a GS25 and GS300.

The camcorder comes up in the system (Device Manager) as a "Video Edit" camera:

WinDV crashes upon hitting "Capture". You'll need to use Scenalyzer. My guide here. Choose "Video Edit" from the dropdown list.

You will have full control of the camcorder from the Scenalyzer panel.

I'll do a test using Win 10 tomorrow and report back.

Righto, as promised, this works in Win 10 as well. The camcorder appears in Device Manager as per Win 11.

    Observations:

WinDV works. The camcorder comes up initially as a "Custom virtual camera…”, but when that is selected in the video source dropdown, it changes to "Video Edit".

To summarise, connect your camera to your PC (USB-A and USB-Mini B), fire up WinDV or Scenealyzer, choose "Video Edit" as your source and off you go.

    This video should help:

As a side note, I currently have Kodak's Easyshare software (circa 2005, as the camera I own is a secondhand Kodak Easyshare Z730 from 2005) installed on my Windows 10 laptop and I followed this tutorial myself when installing the software from the software CD a few months ago.
