What causes video to be blocky like this? Assuming it wasn't deinterlaced properly? I got a Peacock subscription to watch the SNL episodes and they all look like this. Is there anyway to fix videos like this? I see it fairly often.

I did not. This is a screenshot from the stream on https://www.peacocktv.com. I have encountered it with archived videos as well over the last few years. So was just curious what's causing it and if there is any software or filters I can run it through to remove it. To me it seem like they ditched one of the interlace fields and doubled up the one they didn't ditch. I just don't understand why a major network would do that, if that's what's going on of course.

Bad or no deinterlacing. The video may also have been captured with a device that stores the lower field above the upper field, resulting in artifacts on diagonal edges, even when they are not in motion.
