  1. Has anyone got or tried a SamSung DVD player model P401 (progressive) ? It said it play VCD, CD-R,CD-RW but does it do SVCD, XVCD, etc... ?

I could not find anywhere on the DVD list of this forum. Search yield no result on this forum.

This seems to be a new model from Samsung. Strange enough, I could not even find it at Samsung product Web site.

I got this unit at Frys (free gift with my new big screen TV), will be shipped to my home tomorrow.

Very curious. I maybe the first one !!!

  2. OK, the unit arrives this morning. I run a quick check with some discs I made:

    1) VCD: works, no surprise
    2) SVCD: works but seems to skip audio on CBR 2500
    3) XVCD: CBR 2400 did not work. It plays very slowly just like my Pioneer 414.

Compared to the Pioneer 333 which works in all cases, this Samsung DVD-P401 does less in this area.

    (new edit)
After playing with it for one evening, I tried more
    It has:
    1) MP3 support. I put in a CD-R that contains about 150 MP3 files on it, and it plays fine. This is one of the feature I loved.
    2) progressive scan and interlace scan mode (selectable by a switch on the back of the unit). Of course, the progressive scan mode does not work with my TV (interlace).

This unit normally costs 199$ at Frys. I still prefer the Pioneer DV-333 for its DVD/VCD/XVCD,SVCD,XSVCD capability.

So far, the PC seems to be the best player of all except I could not connect it to my big screen TV.

  3. OK, after playing with it for a few days, I decided to exchange it for a Pioneer DV-343 (which is pretty similar to DV-333 model).
If you have progressive TV and love MP3 capabilities, this Samsung unit is a good one to have.
