I'm looking for a tool to automatically correct image brightness in a given scene. The camera responds too quickly (sometimes badly) to changes in ambient brightness and the video flickers.
Can you recommend something for Avisynth, VDub or Vegas?

  2. Retinex (https://github.com/Asd-g/AviSynth-Retinex) should work (for example: retinex.MSRCP(sigma=[250,250,250], fulls=false, fulld=false))
users currently on my ignore list: deadrats, Stears555

  3. Here an attempt of Retinex with a luma mask to preserve the bright sky a bit better.

  4. Adding DeFlicker or similar after Retinex might improve the results additionally.

Definitely better than my attempts with this filter
The simple ColorYUV(autogain=true) filter gives surprisingly good results.
