    Have you tried Virtualdub2 ?
    It opens and can save to many more formats

    There is an mp3 encoder, it's the FFmpeg Lame MP3.
    Direct stream copy does work differently, it uncompresses the audio (PCM/wav) and writes that out when direct is chosen.
    (That's why it's so big) I don't know a way around that but somebody may know definitively.

    It can be worked around, For example, you can turn off the audio in vdub2 and then re-add it later using MKVtoolnix
    to create an MKV file using the new video and the old audio

    Using File/export/stream copy (in vdub2) will copy the selection as-is, both video and audio

    "ffmpeg Lame mp3" is one of the built-in items, doesn't need any external files,
    it's in the list in the image you posted above - so not sure exactly what you encountered...
