  1. This may have been posted before. I got it off the UK DVDWriters site.

    http://www.dvdwriters.co.uk/

Its just like the CDR Identifier tool which was floating around the net except this is meant for DVDs. The useful option is "0E - Pre-Recorded Information in Lead-In" - this is the location of the manufacturer ID. You also must have ASPI Layer 4.60 for it to
    work properly.

It does work. I was able to identify some media I got from CdRecordable.com as Ritek. Now I know why it sucks.

  3. Can you check out that unbranded DVD-R media(Burns at 2X) and tell me what the vendor is? I am very curious to see who make this stuff.

Which brand do you mean? CD-recordable.com's? if so they make their own.

Also how exactly do you use this?

  5. I doubt that CDRecordable makes their own media.
I thought you had some cheap media that burns at 2X.
To run the Utility you have to make sure that Aspi32.DLL or Wnaspi32.dll
has to be in the same directory as the utility. If you have Nero loaded just place it into the Program files\ahead\nero directory. Run the utility.
Place a DVD-R or - RW disk into your DVD-R drive make sure your drive is selected and the "OE - Precorded information in Lead-in" function is selected. Click the Read DVD Structure button
The Second line of the returned info will give you the Media Vendor.
    Example: PVC(Pioneer), JVC(JVC), CMC, TDK.

Thanks for the help, well they do claim to make thieir own and I have ran into no other media brands with their "exact" issues so personally I'm starting to think maybe they are telling the truth.

  7. Just bought a memorex 3 pack of dvd-r's. All 3 returned a power calibration error in nero 5.5.7.8 when trying to burn at 1X!!! Who would have thought memorex is crap? Oh well my princos will have to do since they will burn at 1X.
Update! I warmed up my memorex dvds in the sun for 10 minutes and they burned fine at 1x. Now I need to try those cd-rec...com dvds that give power cal error at 2x to see if warming up allows 2x writing.

If I don't stick it in the Nero directory, my Pioneer DVD-ROM is seen (along with Image Drive). However, as expected, nothing works - I get an ASPI error.

If I stick it in the Nero directory (where WNASPI32.DLL resides) my Panasonic LF-D311 is also seen, even though it is external Firewire. Furthermore, several ID functions do work for the Panasonic and the Pioneer DVD-ROM.

However, the pre-recorded info option does NOT work. I get that same ASPI error as if WNASPI32.DLL weren't present. Any ideas?

By the way, this is with Windows XP and the latest Adaptec drivers:

    ASPI32.SYS 4.71.1
    WOWPOST.EXE 4.6 (1021)
    WINASPI.DLL 4.6 (1021)
    WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.1

Make a folder and put a copy of the latest aspi files in it, then put the program in there... works fine for me.

    Doesn't work for me.

Does this program work with DVD-ROM drives?

If not, does it work well with drives in Firewire cases?

What about non-Pioneer drives? Mine is a Panasonic.

Ritek's are an awesome brand I've never had one bad Ritek (out of about 85 movies I've made). Plays in PS2, most Apex's, Panasonic A110, and a few sony's that I've tested them on. What is your method you use?

  12. Raagaaman....Thank you for the explanaition for ADVDinfo I have been trying to get it to work, now it does

Now I am wondering if you or anyone else has a list of the manufacturing codes, ie. PVC,CMC, etc...and what they stand for ? I am trying to compile a list of them and post them for others too, to better help ID the dvd's.

    Thanks again

I realize this has been addressed many times b4, but I have yet to see a "fix" that has worked for me.

I am running XP Pro with aspi drivers ver. 471 and yet the utility refuses to work when oE is selected. I keep getting that damn aspi error window.

    ASPI Command returned:
    SenseKey 05h ; ASC 24h; ASCQ 00h

I have tried putting the above mentioned drivers in the same folder and also putting the applet in my Nero folder.

    Any more ideas???
