Same problem here on Win7. I tried a backup disk with no recent changes then went to a second, my mirror machine, and had similar problems.
Screen freezes at startup.
What could effect multiple machines and program versions?
One thing I noted in trying to reinstall was that the MVPlayer needed for video/audio would not auto install with an error trying to access Github.
-- On Windows 10, my third and last PC to try, SE loads the SRT and an audio stream but cannot load the video.
I will wait to see any replies without trying to contact SE. -
What a day. I did find one working edition at videohelp software which is the portable current edition, not beta. Unfortunately my good install (after taking a tip to run chkdsk from an older thread) cannot tell if audio is on b/c no speaker on the PC. I'll try to duplicate the procedure.
At least no screen lockups for now. -

I am trying the sfc, also chkdsk and system cleanup. A programmed edition of SFC I have runs from the desktop (from sevenforums, a trusted source.) On that it says if corrupt files are found rerun it 2-3 times and reboot in between. Takes time but I'll see if it works. I will have to reinstll Subtitle Edit after all that.

The cleaning and SFC routines plus a fresh install of 3.6.12 portable got the program running. However SE still cannot find the player install needed to use any video. Same stallout occurs in trying to use the pop up install prompt or the the one in settings.
Please suggest a manual install of the MPV player. -
I have the MPV player and ready to use it says. It took a long time and I thought it was stalled out.
I'll see if everything is going tomorrow. -
Found some info here but it's almost like reading chinese to me: https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2422989.html
Found this to work:
- Download the Portable version os Subtitle Edit here (it's a Windows version but works fine with Mono): https://github.com/SubtitleEdit/subtitleedit/releases
[Attachment 70545 - Click to enlarge]
Save it somewhere and extract it. I gave the file more understandable name.
- Down this page, they explain how to run it: https://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit/help#linux
- I ran all these commands (except for installing the VLC, I use the MPV player instead):
Code:sudo apt-get install mono-complete sudo apt-get install libhunspell-dev sudo apt-get install libmpv-dev sudo apt-get install tesseract-ocr sudo apt-get install tesseract-ocr-eng sudo apt-get install vlc sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
Code:cd /home/username/your_path/Folder'sname/ mono SubtitleEdit.exe
Hope it helps you guys.Last edited by EdwhardHitten; 27th Apr 2023 at 02:21.

thanks for that for Ubuntu users.
My Windows 7 Subtitle Edit is going where ever I did the cleaning routines mentioned earlier. chkdsk, sfc, the Win7 diskcleaner (not CCleaner etc) then SFC a time or two or three with restarts in between. SFC did detect problem it could not fix after all that but SE runs better. -
One follow up here b/c no other place it seemed to make sense.
I had the screen lockup problem again. Now knowing I should run SFC, I simply loaded that to a window on top of the frozen Subtitle job. As the SFC worked, the Subtitle Edit 'activated' and began to show everything normally. This was so odd I thought it worth mentioning. -
