hello, i'm confused of what i have to buy to get what i'm trying to do.
what i'm planning to do is buy a digital camera so i can take pictures and hook it up to the pc, but i want to get the cheap ones that r like $70
then i found out i can get firewire so i can hook up my cam corder to pc and use it as a camera and save the movies to pc.
then i found out i need a digital camcorder, which i donno how to tell, it doesn't say on the cam so i don't think it is.
so i'm left with one choice , get a video capture card.
do u know what the difference in quality comparing to my sony cam corder to the $70 webcam + camera
and what options i have? cause i'm not sure if i can do what i want with a video capture card.
all i want is to record videos and send it to pc, and also take stills and send it to pc as pictures.
as long as the pics and video is clear, it is okay.

Hello nwgtr,
I'll try and help you if I can. A cheep dig camera should be ok. I have used a JamCam with acceptable results (has serial and usb ports). If you have a dig camcorder then firewire is the way to go. If you are using VHS tapes then you don't have a digital camcorder. With this you need a video capture card or something like a Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge which uses firewire and converts the VHS to digital (costs around $225 to $300). Most editing programs to my experiance will allow you to grab stills for pictures.
Good Luck

cause i thought there r video capture cards that r like under $100
the ATI, and few others, as long as it does the job.
the cameras that i looked at r half webcam, half camera
which cost about the same as some of the vid capture cards. that's y i want to check if it is better quality with the cam corder that i have.
and if i could use my cam corder as a webcam if i use vid capture card.
ultimately i would like 3 things, capture video to my pc to create vcd, which in turn i could pause the clip and take stills as pictures.
also use it as a webcam. so if i could do those with video capture card, i would just go with the videocapture, since i could do more with it. plus the cheap webcam/camera doesn't last that long unless i get one of those expensive digital cameras :( -
you want to stick to a video capture card if youve already got a camcorder, it will do all you want and cost very little, i use win tv card, which cost about £30 and a analogue camcorder( makes movies ,snapshot, and webcam) its all you need
