As I am VERY used to doing, I split a video into parts, to recombine in a new order. But this time, UNLIKE normally, the various parts all have the same generic icon and so are visually indistinguishable. How can I get the parts of the video to do the usual displaying of a still from the start of the clip ?

Indeed. Normally that shows the file for each video clip with an icon that is a still from early on in the clip

You should install K Lite Codec Pack. I recommend the Standard Edition.

It's already installed, (but from 2005). I've updated it. My problem has NOT been solved.

You could try this. I've never installed K-Lite.

K-Lite Codec Pack in the Start Menu,
    Codec tweak tool
    Thumbnails
And enable all of the formats.

    I have used CodecTweakTool_660.exe

Jagabo - Icaros failed for the reasons shown in the attachment. I presume those same reasons are causing 'the problem' in the first place.

S-mp Use VLC to change icons to thumbnails - how ?

PCspeak - I can't understand your instructions and there seems to be a contradiction about K-Lite

The codec tweak tool is part of the K-Lite pack, I think.
If you did a full install of K-Lite then it should be in the K-Lite folder, found by clicking on the Windows Start button.
One of the buttons shown after running the tweak tool is Thumbnails.
Or get https://www.videohelp.com/software/Codec-Tweak-Tool and run it.

I got and ran the tweak tool - it made no difference to solving 'my problem'.

  14. What codec an container are your files? What exactly do you mean by "I split a video into parts". What program did you use? Is each part playable by Windows Media Player? Any other players?

"What codec an container are your files?" The file type is MP4 - I have NO IDEA about containers.

"I split a video into parts" means that if I started with a ten minute video, I could end up with ten one-minute video clips.

"What program did you use?" SOLVEIGMM VIDEO SPLITTER Business Edition Portable Version: 6.0160115 - which I use routinely without running into the stated problem.

"Is each part playable by Windows Media Player? The first two are playable by Windows Media Player, and the first one is playable by : Format Player, GOM Player, KM Player, Movie Maker, MP4 Player, MPC—HC, SMPlayer Media Player, and VLC

MP4 is the container. Containers are different ways of organizing video streams, audio streams, subtitles, etc. within a file. Different containers organize things differently. Again, what video and audio codecs are used?

Since some of the files are playable and some not -- It sounds to me like SOLVEIGMM just went bonkers and screwed up when it saved the files. If the file can't be played Windows Explorer cannot show a thumbnail. Does MediaInfo show correct information about each of the files?

"what video and audio codecs are used" Dont know and don't know how to determine it either.

"Since some of the files are playable and some not" Misunderstanding - because there are many, I only tried the first two in WMP ; then I tried only the first one in all the other players I have listed - there were NO failures.

"Does MediaInfo show correct information about each of the files?" I don't know how to access, run or interpret MediaInfo. Would not know what is correct or incorrect.
    Quote Quote
  20. If MediaInfo shows almost nothing -- that's incorrect and indicates a very badly damaged file. If if shows dimensions, codecs, etc. -- that means the file isn't totally trashed. Use View -> Text mode. Copy the contents and past it here. It will look something like:

Yes. Highlight the text then use the Code Tags tool (hash mark icon in in the toolbar) in toolbar above the edit box. Or type in the code block text:

In any case your files look like normal MP4 files with AVC (h.264) video and AAC audio. Since Windows Media Player can play them you have an AVC decoder installed -- so you should have thumbnails instead of a generic icon. I don't know what the problem is.

Thank you for the copy-technique instructions.

"you should have thumbnails instead of a generic icon" and yet I do have a generic FOR THE VIDEO (NOT for the player), and no thumbnails - which is why this thread exists on the forum.
