Hi all,
Wondering how do I download non-text subtitles from streaming video?
I used yt-dlp --list-subs and saw there are subtitles but when I tried commands such as yt-dlp --allow-u "URL" --write-subs, it says "There's no subtitles for the requested languages"
Any idea what I can try?
Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestions ampersand and Sorenb
Just to double check, do I use the link to the manifest mpd as the url? I was returned a "There are no subtitles for the requested languages". However, when I played the video, image based subtitles were shown.
I managed to locate the vtt file but it contains links to png (image based subs). Is there any way to convert these to srt? Or how do I playback vtt files with my video?Last edited by aomatani; 5th Mar 2023 at 07:03.

Best give the top page url a paste on here, as we have no idea if you are dig something wrong or if the website has the page payout differently and you aren't describing it correctly.

For those that can access Hulu in Japan, here's the link

Those png files may reflect on the language. Would a vtt file allow for Kanji, Kana or other logographic languages, hence the need for using png files instead?
-
Hmm, normal text-based srt files works perfectly fine displaying Kanji, Kana, and also Chinese characters so I have no idea why they would do that. It's more like to deter people from downloading them, perhaps😂 Btw, if it's not possible to download or convert to srt, do you happen to know how to merge these image-based subs with the video (through reencoding)?
Or do you have any idea how to playback vtt files on say vlc player? It only displays the links to the png but not the png themselves😅 -
If srt allow them, webvtt will too, similar format.
Sounds like the format chosen by Hulu.jp is this
https://bitmovin.com/docs/player/articles/webvtt-based-thumbnails
I'm sure there is a means to doing what you wish, either manually (bit of a pain) or automatically (ideal)
But, I'm unsure of how to go about it.
Would subtitleedit load the vtt and allow the conversion? Would tesseract? -
Thank you for getting back. You're right, I think that's the format.
Subtitle loads the vtt but it's also a list of png😂
But in the end I managed to do it.
There's another vtt in the m3u8 which contains text, so all it requires was some cleaning up and converting to srt
Thank you again!🙏🏻
