  1. I think I must be doing something wrong when trying to convert avi to mp4 in virtualdub2. The file that I get is much smaller than the previous avi, but its file type is still saved as avi. When I go to properties it still says avi under file type.

In the compression settings, I have been selecting x264 8 bit - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec. I havent changed any of the default configure settings.

Is there something Im missing here?

  2. File -> Save Video... set the "Save As Type" field to MP4 before saving. Tye resulting file size depends on the codec and settings.

  3. Ok Ive just tried to save the video as MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) (*.mp4) and MP4 +faststart (*.mp4).

I get virtualdub error message pcm_s16le: codec not currently supported in container mp4, for both types.

Ive read that it might be because of pcm audio, but its strange that the same file converts to mp4 with no problem in handbrake?

Set the audio to full compression, then you will be able to select AAC either under compression or on the Save screen.

  5. Maybe handbrake converted the audio? I don't know.
    In Vdub2 you can either
    - select Matroska(*.mkv) as a container which will accept the PCM audio format
    - or re-encode the audio to AAC for example if you need it in .mp4.

Edit: I just found that handbrake selects the AAC encoder automatically as its fallback default. See the audio tab/Selection behavior in handbrake.

pcm isn't officially supported by the mp4 container. If you must have pcm you can use mov or mkv instead. Or you can elect to compress the audio with a codec that's accepted by mp4 -- usually aac -- as others have pointed out.

  7. Ok, I was trying to deinterlace and convert to mp4 in hybrid the other night and I kept getting an audio error there, it wouldnt let me compress it to aac either though.

Im not doing much better now in vdub. When I got to the audio tab, the compression option is greyed out and I cant select it.

When I go to save video there is only an option to deselect audio. Should I be setting the audio compression before capture? If I should there isnt actually an option for aac in the compression list?

  8. In the Audio Tab of VirtualDub2 you must select 'Full processing mode' in order to enable 'Compression.....'

  9. Ive managed to do it guys, I selected full processing mode and it then allowed me to select the compression options.

One thing Im not sure about, I have been using lagarith compression up until now for avi files, is there a certain one that I should be using when converting to mp4?

I just used x264 8 bit - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec from the compression list.

    And I saved file type as MP4 (MPEG-4 part 14 (*.mp4).

It worked but there was definitely a big drop in quality, more so than in handbrake I think?

  10. Use clever Ffmpeg-GUI.
Load your avi, click main, click encode video stream, click keep resolution, set CRF 20, click encode.
If finished, click encode audio stream, click go to the encoder, set aac as encoder, click encode.
If finished, click multiplex, the new created streams are shown in green, deselect all other streams (the blue one), set mp4 as container, click multiplex.
    Done.
You'll find your new mp4 video into the target folder.

Try the Slow preset, with Rate Control set to Single Pass - Ratefactor Based, with crf set to 18.

You can configure the encoder for a higher quality. Set the Ratefactor to 18.0.
Press the Configure button when you selected the codec to see...
